Now--From Mahonia on MAHONIA M. 'ARTHUR MENZIES' (Mahonia japonica x lomarifolia). This hybrid is a great winter blooming shrub. Our plants are 10-12' tall and are fully evergreen. Our plants have survived 0° F. undamaged. The flower cluster is over one foot across through late fall into winter. In spring it has blue-purple fruit. Makes a beautiful complement to the leaves. 2 gal. $ 32.00 M. 'CHARITY' - One of the M. media hybrids (japonica x lomarifolia). One of our finest winter (actually year round) shrubs. The evergreen foliage gets up to 18" long and 12" wide. Our big plants of the media hybrids are 12' tall and make an architectual form. The flowers begin to show color (bright yellow) in late November and continue until February. The fruit turns bluish-purple in late spring. When the birds discover the fruit they immediately devour them. 2 gal. $ 30.00 M. 'UNDERWAY' -This M. media hybrid has more cut leaves than some of the other forms. The flowers are the typical bright yellow in mid winter. This hybrid mahonia is much more difficult to find in the trade so we are happy to be able to list. 1 gal. $ 32.00 METASEQUOIA GLYPTOSTROBOIDES M. g. 'WAASLAND' -An almost columnar form of dawn redwood. The leaves are light green all summer and turn orange yellow in the fall. This deciduous tree will have dark, almost black, stems in winter. 2 gal. $ 45.00 M . g. 'GOLD RUSH' - This dawn redwood is distinctive because its needles are rich yellow all summer. This deciduous tree was a sport from Metasequoia glyptostroboides found in China during the 1940's. Can grow in moist soil and makes a soft backdrop of yellow behind other conifers. 1 gal. $ 32.00 2 gal. $ 40.00 NELLIA AFFINIS is an American native that has purple new leaves. The leaves are about 2" long and are deeply serrated. This medium sized shrub has pink flowers 2" long in late spring. This attractive shrub should be planted more often in our gardens. (We need to get a plant into our own garden!) 2 gal. $ 18.00 NOTHOPANAX DELAVAYII -This semi hardy (15° F.) evergreen has leaves that look somewhat like a maple. Eventually getting 6-8' tall, the tropical looking leavess are a background to the ivy-like white flowers. 1 gal. $ 20.00 NYSSA N. SINENSIS - Finally we have a few plants of this excellent plant. Nyssa sinensis is a Chinese relative to our Southeast native tupelo. The small to medium sized tree is adaptable and easy to grow. Fall color is stunning redorange. This is a tree that is practically unknown in American gardens, but should be grown more. 1 gal. $18.00 20 NYSSA SYLVATICA 'AUTUMN CASCADE'' - This black gum is a native of the Southeast U.S. The foliage is glossy green during summer turning glorious red-purple in fall. The plant is a weeping form, so can be grown in smaller gardens. Very adaptable for wet areas as well as well drained. 1 gal. $ 22.00 N. SYLVATICA 'RED WINE' - We have also seen this plant listed as N. syl. 'Red Red Wine'. The dark green glossy foliage turns brilliant dark red in fall. The southeastern U.S. native will grow in wet soils as well as well drained soils. 2 gal. $ 25.00 OMPHALOIDES 'CHERRY INGRAM' - Named for English gardener Collingwood Ingram (of flowering cherry fame). This low growing perennial gets up to 1' tall in bloom with small brilliant blue flowers. In early March-April O. 'Charry Ingram' is a perfect companion for Corylopsis pauciflora. The plants will slowly grow into mats of flowers and foliage. 1 gal. $ 9.00 OPHIOPOGON NIGRESCENS - Black Mondo Grass. The black color is actually a sunburn of maximum proportions. If put in full shade, it will be green. Ophiopogon nigrescens a low growing, grassy looking plant. It is great with cyclamen or snowdrops for a great contrast. 1 gal. $ 12.00 OSMANTHUS O. BURKWOODII - A 5' shrub with small evergreen foliage. The leaves are dark green and matte not shiny and the white flowers will cover the plants in early spring. Osmanthus burkwoodii is an easy grower in the Northwest, California and the South. 1 gal. $ 10.00 O. FRAGRANS VAR. AURANTIACUS - This is an upright growing evergreen shrub. Probably will grow to 15' in time. The flower clusters are orange and are sweetly fragrant during fall-winter. 1 gal. $ 25.00 O. HETEROPHYLLUS 'GOSHIKI' - This evergreen shrub grows 4'-5' tall and wide in time. The foliage is holly like and is marbled with yellow on a dark green background. 1 gal. $ 15.00 2 gal. $ 2500 O. OGON - Has golden holly-like leaves throught the year. Our plant sulked until the magnolia overhead grew. Seems to do best in shade as the color will be best and the plant will thrive. 1 gal. $ 15.00 O. 'SAN JOSE - We never seem to have enough of this evergreen shrub. O. 'San Jose' gets to 15' and is an upright grower. Has been hardy to -12° F. here. The evergreen leaves are holly-like, but don't have sharp points like the holly. The tiny whitish flowers in fall have a wonderful apricot fragrance. O. 'San Jose will make a superb hedge. 1 gal. $ 15.00 2 gal. $ 22.00 O. 'SASABA' - Even though these plants are small we are offering them because we think O. 'Sasaba' is an outstanding plant. The sharply pointed evergreen leaves look somewhat like a small bamboo. We have seen 5-6' upright shrubs of O. 'Sasaba' at Brookside Gardens, MD and were very impressed. The plants we are offering are 3 year olds and seem to take off and grow faster after this age. 1 gal. $ 15.00
OSMUDA REGALIS 'PURPUREA'- This giant among hardy ferns gets to at least 8'. Our 15 year old is now 7-8' and still getting larger. The light green leaves turn yellow and tan in the fall before dying down for winter. 1 gal. $ 15.00 OXYDENDRUM ARBOREUM - Sourwood. This small tree has almost everything we could want in a tree. The small tree gets to 20' or so and has an arching form. The white flowers look like long fingers and are small white bells in summer. In fall the red color is gorgeous red for quite a long time. Easy to grow in well drained soil. 1 gal. $ 14.00 OZOTHAMNUS ROSMINARIFOLIUS - This tiny leafed gray foliaged plant will get 4-5' tall. Year round the evergreen plant has pretty foliage for full sun. The flowers are in white clusters. 1 gal. $ 14.00 PAEONIA P. DELAVAYI - This plant looks very much like P. ludlowii var 'Lutea', but rather than the brilliant yellow flowers, but rather than the brilliant yellow flowers P. delavayii will have deep maroon flowers. The 6-8' shrub will have multiple trunks and spectacular green foliage all summer. In the fall the leaves will turn right yellow. The plant is very hardy as well as being a beautiful shrub. 1 gal. $ 16.00 P. LUDLOWII 'LUTEA' - This tree peony has single golden yellow flowers. The plant can get to 8' tall in 20 years. The foliage is typical tree peony form but is longer and narrow. These plants are seedlings so may take 2-3 years to bloom but will have uniform gold, yellow flowers. 1 gal. $ 16.00 P. 'ALICE HARDING' - (Lemoine 1935). A semidouble medium yellow. The foliage is attractive as all the tree peonies. 3 gal. $ 75.00 P. 'BANQUET' - (Saunders 1941) This semi double, red flowering tree peony is very striking in May. It's hard to miss these beautiful flowers. 5 gal. $ 100.00 P. 'GOLD SOVEREIGN' - (1949) . This soft yellow tree peony is the last to bloom in May. The multiple stemmed plant fills in, growing fast into a broad plant. 3 gal. $ 120.00 P. 'KIUSHU CAPRICE' - This tree peony is by far the earliest to bloom, usually by April 15. The large pink flowers are semi-double and last a long period. The plant should get to be 3' X 3'. 5 gal. $ 120.00 P. 'VESUVIAN' - (Saunders 1948) - This vigorous tree peony is very low growing and not only has beautiful flowers, but the cut leafed foliage turns color in the fall to extend the season. P.'Vesuvian' has dark purple-black double flowers for a long season in late April into early May. 2 gal. $ 75.00 PARROTIA P. PERSICA 'SELECT' - This parrotia has a purple margin on the leaves during summer. Fall color is the same beautiful orange, red and yellow as the species. 2 gal. $ 35.00 21 PARROTIA PERSICA 'VANESSA' - This is a narrow growing parrotia, so can be grown in a much smaller position. 1 gal. $ 25.00 P. PERSICA 'PENDULA' - A much more beautiful plant than the books say. Our plant is 10' tall and 8' across in 10 years. It isn't exactly weeping, but more arching. The newer growth has a purplish tint and the fall color is very good. Among the finest fall colors in '99. It was still colorful at Christmas. 2 gal. $ 35.00 PARTHENOCISSUS P. 'FENWAY PARK' - This golden form of Boston Ivy was actually found in Boston at Fenway park. The fine textured golden leaves hold their color all summer. It isn't an agressive vine so it can grow with other moderate growers. 1 gal. $ 10.00 F. 'HENRYANA ' - This parthenocissus species has dark green leaves with silver veins. There is also a definite purple cast to the underside of the leaves and petioles. The fall color is brilliant red. This is a small growing vine which does well in filtered shade like growing up a magnolia. 1 gal. $ 10.00 PHILADELPHUS P. 'BELLE ETOILE' - This fragrant mock orange has white flowers with lavender flush on the inside of the petals. Some books say how dark purple the centers are, but being honest, the centers are a nice light lavender. Be warned in warm climates (California and the deep south) the petals will be white. This is one of the loveliest mock oranges. 1 gal. $ 15.00 P. CORONARIUS 'AUREUS' -We have only a limited supply of the golden foliaged mock orange this year. The foliage is bright golden yellow that will fade to yellowchartreuse yellow by mid summer. Needs some light shade so the foliage won't burn. 1 gal. $20.00 P. CORONARIUS 'VARIEGATUS.' - We have been trying to get enough of these plants for several years. We don't have a big supply but we can help some people get this beautiful plant. The variegation is a broad white margin to the mid-green leaves. We don't seem to see many flowers but they are white and sweetly scented in June. 1 gal. $ 15.00 P. DELAVAYI 'PURPUREUS' - This mock orange has a grace about the plant stems and flowers sometimes lacking in the hybrids. The light stems terminate in purple stems holding the small white flowers. The flowers slightly droop mAking them very graceful. 2 gal. $20.00 P. 'FALLBROOK' - The flowers of P. 'Fallbrook' are single but are 2" across and are pure white. The fragrant flowers always draw attention because they are so large. 1 gal. $ 18.00 P. 'INNOCENCE' - A variegated mock orange that has splashed white on dark green leaves. The flowers are 2" across and are pure white. Makes a nice change from the typical mock oranges. 1 gal. $ 20.00 P. 'MANTEAU D'HERMINE' - This Lemoine hybrid is a 2-3' mound of small leves. Flowers are double, fragrant and creamy white in June. 1 gal. $ 15.00
