Philadelphus (cont.)
P. 'SNOWBELLE' - This mock orange will be 3-4' tall.
The flowers are double white in late May-June. Can be grown
in even the smallest garden. 1 gal. $ 15.00
P. 'SNOW DWARF' - A very hardy Canadian hybrid
mock orange. The white flowers are very fragrant in June and
are 1 1/2" across. Grows to 4-5' tall.
1 gal. $ 15.00
PHORMIUM - We have been able to grow the New Zealand
flaxes outside through 0-10° F. for years. We, in fact, just had
to remove a 10' P. 'Dark Delight' from the front of Eric and
Dawn's front window (bad placement). The plants are very
happy in full sun with lots of water. We see plants in
California with low water, but color seems to fade. Superb
container plants in areas that get colder. Just move into
unheated area that won't go below 15° F. for extended periods.
P. 'DUSKY CHIEF'. This dark purple phormium will
make a great accent in the perennial border with yellows,
chartreuse foliage or other low growing plants.
1 gal. $ 16.00
P. 'MAORI MAIDEN' - Has rich purple-pink stripes
running vertically up the leaves. One of the most colorful of
the New Zealand flaxes. 1 gal. $ 16.00
P. 'PINK STRIPE'. This large grower has purple centers
with pink margins. The leaves are broad so will make quite a
statement in the garden or container.
1 gal. $ 16.00
P. 'SUNDOWNER' - The standard in larger deep pink
purple phormiums. We have 5-6' plants. Our plants have
been hardy to 10° F. in well drained soil
4" pot $10.00
P. 'YELLOW WAVE' - Has arching yellow and green
striped leaves. Our biggest plants have been 2' tall and 2-3'
across after several years. 1 gal. $ 16.00
PHYSOCARPUS
P. 'COPPERTINA' - (P.O. Mindia PPAF) A hybrid
between P. 'Darts Gold' and P. 'Diablo'. The French hybrid
has purple foliage with copper highlights especially in spring.
We could imagine this plant as a background for perennials or
other plants in the garden. 1 gal. $ 12.00
P. 'DIABLO' ® (Opulifolius monlo PPAF) - This
ninebark has very dark purple foliage all summer. This fairly
recent introduction will get to 8' tall. In late spring the white
flowers appear in clusters. This is a great plant in combination
with golden foliage or more subtle with pink white and
lavender flowers. Pruned hard, P. 'Diablo' can be kept to 6'.
2 gal. $ 15.00
P. 'SUMMER WINE' - P. 'SEWARD' PPAF - This
purple (more purple-bronze) foliaged nine bark has leaves
more divided than P. 'Diablo'. This plant is much smaller (3')
than P. 'Diablo', so can grow in even small perennial or shrub
borders. Flowers are pinkish white in early summer.
1 gal. $ 12.00
PIERIS
P. 'FLAMING SILVER' - It's interesting to see plants
we have introduced to the U.S. gardening community become
more widely available. We first grew P. 'Flaming Silver' in
the early '80's and still enjoy its beautiful growth and foliage.
The new growth is brilliant pink and later turns into rich
variegated evergreen foliage. Very limited number of flowers.
Our 25 year old plant is 2' tall. 1 gal. $ 14.00
22
PIERIS 'LITTLE HEATH' - This wonderful smallish
shrub has small green foliage with a cream margin. We say
smallish because we originally read it could get 2' tall. Our
plant is more like 6'. Are we too kind to the plant? Our plant
blooms only sporadically each spring! Makes an attractive
sort of bonsai effect as it ages. 1 gal. $ 14.00
PISTACIA CHINENSIS - Chinese Pistachio - We grow this
nut for the stunning fall color. This plant has some of the
finest fall color of any tree. The brilliant scarlet foliage colors
even in Southern California. 1 gal. $ 15.00
PODOPHYLLUM -
P. DELAVAYI - This Chinese mayapple is a clump
former with deep green foliage and deep purple blotches. This
woodlander has beautiful foliage and pinkish-red flowers
followed by small apricot colored fruit. Can grow well with
ferns and epimediums. 1 gal. $ 20.00
P. 'KALEIDESCOPE ' - We were awestruck when we
first saw this plant. The leaves are rounded and have dark
purple blotches on a medium green background. We have'nt
had them for sale as they are so expensive wholesale. We
can't charge the fortune they are worth, but we like the plant so
much we are making it available to our customers.
1 gal. $ 35.00
POLYGONATUM
P. HUMILE - A petite little ground cover perennial that
will get only 6" tall. The deep green leaves are shiny and
make the plants look like a little forest of trees. The small
flowers are pendant white bells. P. humile is a good ground
cover for small areas around rhododendrons.
1 gal. $ 8.00
POLYSTICHUM
P, SETIFERUM - ALASKA FERN - But it' actually very
British. The soft fronds are lacy and open showing the fine
leaflets. Grow anywhere except brilliant sun. We have plants
through our garden and alwayS enjoy this excellent evergreen.
1 gal. $ 15.00
P. SETIFERUM MULTILOBUM DIVISLOBUM -
The best of the "Alaska" ferns actually comes from Europe.
We continue to try to keep enough of this fern propagated to
keep up with the demand. The fronds are light green and are
literally fluffy with so many leaflets. We will try hard to
grow more for next year.
LIMITED 1 gal. $ 15.00
POPULUS 'RICHARDII' - This golden poplar is a small
growing shrubby tree. The leaves are bright gold even in full
sun and are silver beneath the leaf so when the leaves twist in
the breeze they glow silver and gold.
5 gal. $ 20.00
PRIMULA SIEBOLDII 'SNOWFLAKE' - A
deciduous primrose that well strut its stuff in early spring and
become dormant by June. The 6" flower stalks are covered
with large snow white flowers in spring. P. sieboldii
'Snowflake' will slowly spread to form a large clump in many
years in the woodland garden. 1 gal. $ 8.00
