Philadelphus (cont.)<br />

P. 'SNOWBELLE' - This mock orange will be 3-4' tall.<br />

The flowers are double white in late May-June. Can be grown<br />

in even the smallest garden. 1 gal. $ 15.00<br />

P. 'SNOW DWARF' - A very hardy Canadian hybrid<br />

mock orange. The white flowers are very fragrant in June and<br />

are 1 1/2" across. Grows to 4-5' tall.<br />

PHORMIUM - We have been able to grow the New Zealand<br />

flaxes outside through 0-10° F. for years. We, in fact, just had<br />

to remove a 10' P. 'Dark Delight' from the front of Eric and<br />

Dawn's front window (bad placement). The plants are very<br />

happy in full sun with lots of water. We see plants in<br />

California with low water, but color seems to fade. Superb<br />

container plants in areas that get colder. Just move into<br />

unheated area that won't go below 15° F. for extended periods.<br />

P. 'DUSKY CHIEF'. This dark purple phormium will<br />

make a great accent in the perennial border with yellows,<br />

chartreuse foliage or other low growing plants.<br />

P. 'MAORI MAIDEN' - Has rich purple-pink stripes<br />

running vertically up the leaves. One of the most colorful of<br />

the New Zealand flaxes. 1 gal. $ 16.00<br />

P. 'PINK STRIPE'. This large grower has purple centers<br />

with pink margins. The leaves are broad so will make quite a<br />

statement in the garden or container.<br />

P. 'SUNDOWNER' - The standard in larger deep pink<br />

purple phormiums. We have 5-6' plants. Our plants have<br />

been hardy to 10° F. in well drained soil<br />

P. 'YELLOW WAVE' - Has arching yellow and green<br />

striped leaves. Our biggest plants have been 2' tall and 2-3'<br />

PHYSOCARPUS<br />

P. 'COPPERTINA' - (P.O. Mindia PPAF) A hybrid<br />

between P. 'Darts Gold' and P. 'Diablo'. The French hybrid<br />

has purple foliage with copper highlights especially in spring.<br />

We could imagine this plant as a background for perennials or<br />

other plants in the garden. 1 gal. $ 12.00<br />

P. 'DIABLO' ® (Opulifolius monlo PPAF) - This<br />

ninebark has very dark purple foliage all summer. This fairly<br />

recent introduction will get to 8' tall. In late spring the white<br />

flowers appear in clusters. This is a great plant in combination<br />

with golden foliage or more subtle with pink white and<br />

lavender flowers. Pruned hard, P. 'Diablo' can be kept to 6'.<br />

P. 'SUMMER WINE' - P. 'SEWARD' PPAF - This<br />

purple (more purple-bronze) foliaged nine bark has leaves<br />

more divided than P. 'Diablo'. This plant is much smaller (3')<br />

than P. 'Diablo', so can grow in even small perennial or shrub<br />

borders. Flowers are pinkish white in early summer.<br />

PIERIS<br />

P. 'FLAMING SILVER' - It's interesting to see plants<br />

we have introduced to the U.S. gardening community become<br />

more widely available. We first grew P. 'Flaming Silver' in<br />

the early '80's and still enjoy its beautiful growth and foliage.<br />

The new growth is brilliant pink and later turns into rich<br />

variegated evergreen foliage. Very limited number of flowers.<br />

Our 25 year old plant is 2' tall. 1 gal. $ 14.00<br />

PIERIS 'LITTLE HEATH' - This wonderful smallish<br />

shrub has small green foliage with a cream margin. We say<br />

smallish because we originally read it could get 2' tall. Our<br />

plant is more like 6'. Are we too kind to the plant? Our plant<br />

blooms only sporadically each spring! Makes an attractive<br />

sort of bonsai effect as it ages. 1 gal. $ 14.00<br />

PISTACIA CHINENSIS - Chinese Pistachio - We grow this<br />

nut for the stunning fall color. This plant has some of the<br />

finest fall color of any tree. The brilliant scarlet foliage colors<br />

even in Southern California. 1 gal. $ 15.00<br />

PODOPHYLLUM -<br />

P. DELAVAYI - This Chinese mayapple is a clump<br />

former with deep green foliage and deep purple blotches. This<br />

woodlander has beautiful foliage and pinkish-red flowers<br />

followed by small apricot colored fruit. Can grow well with<br />

ferns and epimediums. 1 gal. $ 20.00<br />

P. 'KALEIDESCOPE ' - We were awestruck when we<br />

first saw this plant. The leaves are rounded and have dark<br />

purple blotches on a medium green background. We have'nt<br />

had them for sale as they are so expensive wholesale. We<br />

can't charge the fortune they are worth, but we like the plant so<br />

much we are making it available to our customers.<br />

POLYGONATUM<br />

P. HUMILE - A petite little ground cover perennial that<br />

will get only 6" tall. The deep green leaves are shiny and<br />

make the plants look like a little forest of trees. The small<br />

flowers are pendant white bells. P. humile is a good ground<br />

cover for small areas around rhododendrons.<br />

POLYSTICHUM<br />

P, SETIFERUM - ALASKA FERN - But it' actually very<br />

British. The soft fronds are lacy and open showing the fine<br />

leaflets. Grow anywhere except brilliant sun. We have plants<br />

through our garden and alwayS enjoy this excellent evergreen.<br />

P. SETIFERUM MULTILOBUM DIVISLOBUM -<br />

The best of the "Alaska" ferns actually comes from Europe.<br />

We continue to try to keep enough of this fern propagated to<br />

keep up with the demand. The fronds are light green and are<br />

literally fluffy with so many leaflets. We will try hard to<br />

grow more for next year.<br />

POPULUS 'RICHARDII' - This golden poplar is a small<br />

growing shrubby tree. The leaves are bright gold even in full<br />

sun and are silver beneath the leaf so when the leaves twist in<br />

the breeze they glow silver and gold.<br />

PRIMULA SIEBOLDII 'SNOWFLAKE' - A<br />

deciduous primrose that well strut its stuff in early spring and<br />

become dormant by June. The 6" flower stalks are covered<br />

with large snow white flowers in spring. P. sieboldii<br />

'Snowflake' will slowly spread to form a large clump in many<br />

years in the woodland garden. 1 gal. $ 8.00<br />
