Learning about safety
in a playful way
At the conventional power plants operated
by EnBW (coal-fired, hydroelectric and
waste-fired power plants), the first six
months of 2008 were "Olympic months", as
the company's work safety specialists had
thought up something special for these
"sensitive" locations: the idea was to address
a total of 12 key issues in the form of a game.
To this end, two teams were formed at each
location and were tested on the relevant
topics one after the other at three-week intervals.
The teams were then awarded gold,
silver or bronze based on the number of
points they scored.
But it wasn't just points that were collected
but also improvement suggestions – 1,400
in all, some of which were put into practice
right away. And this successful concept is to
be continued: in 2009, a "work safety week"
will be staged at each of the conventional
power plant locations, and plans are also
afoot to hold a kind of "Olympic Games" for
the nuclear power segment at a later date.
Accident rates continue to fall
The number of accidents fell yet again in
2008 – underlining the importance of work
safety management at EnBW: the rate of
reportable accidents – in other words, accidents
resulting in more than three lost days
– was 7.3 per thousand employees, following
figures of 8.2 and 7.9 for 2007 and 2006.
The accidents of employees of external contractors
are also documented. Compared to
other companies in the industry, the accident
rates at EnBW paint an extremely
encouraging picture. At the same time, however,
the number of lost days was slightly
higher than in 2007 at 1,759.
Protection thanks
to safety standards
The safety of our employees, the employees
of external contractors, our suppliers and
our plants – as well as the people who live
near these plants – is just as important to us
as the safety of our products. We play an
active role in the German Association for
Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies
(VDE). In addition, the EnBW Energy
Community enables us to maintain close
contacts not only with the local electrical
trades but also with the architects, engineers,
energy consultants, wholesalers and
companies from the electrical appliance
sector who are also members of this organisation.
Moreover, the EnBW Energy Community
also works together with guilds,
special-interest federations and training
institutions and provides its members with
information on both new technical and
legal regulations and developments.
