Ecological and social commitment
Our corporate strategy is geared towards
securing the long-term success of our business
operations and the exploitation of opportunities
for growth. We want to be economically
successful while acting in an
ecologically and socially responsible manner.
Our strategy focuses on the reliable
supply of energy to our customers at affordable
prices and on the challenges of climate
protection. As an integrated company, we
are active both on the network side (transport,
distribution) and on the market side
(generation, trading, sales), and we can
therefore ensure the reliable supply and
provision of electricity, gas and heat as well
as energy-related and environmental services
to our customers. Our strategy for
growth is driven by a wide-ranging investment
programme totalling 7.7 billion € in
the period from 2009 to 2011.
In order to achieve our goals, we are concentrating
on five strategic fields of action:
› Development of our generating capacity,
in particular the expansion of renewables,
› Expansion of our gas business,
› Concentration on the core German market,
accompanied by selective growth in foreign
markets,
› Establishment of new business areas,
› Process improvement and exploitation of
synergies.
As an energy supply company, EnBW is fully
aware of its special responsibility for climate
and environmental protection. Back in
2006, EnBW was the first big energy supplier
to begin arranging for the certification of
its environmental management system in
line with the international DIN ISO 14001
standard. At the current point in time,
around 90% of the employees in the EnBW
Group already work in companies with certified
environmental management systems.
In order to achieve our corporate goals, we
need motivated and qualified employees –
and that is why we require and promote
flexibility, creativity and commitment. Our
personnel policy focuses on further training
and development, the health of our employees
and the reconcilability of career and
private life. EnBW was once again named
among the "Top Employers" in Germany in
2008 and 2009.
Also see p. 40 et seq.
EnBW is an active and responsible member
of society. Our social commitment extends
to the areas of sport, education, the arts, culture
and volunteer activities. We attach importance
to ongoing dialogue with our
stakeholders. We discuss the potential impact
of political decisions and are on hand
to advise them if they need our specialist
expertise. We particularly value the dialogue
with our employees, customers, business
partners and shareholders. Our efforts
in the social sphere are focused in our home
region of Baden-Württemberg.
Successful business operations
As part of the strategy to develop our generating
capacity, EnBW will make major investments
in replacing power plants and
modernising and expanding our networks
in the coming years. This concept is based
on a balanced, climate-compatible generating
mix made up of fossil fuels, nuclear
power and renewables. To secure baseload
supplies, we will also need modern coalfired
power plants in combination with
heat-and-power cogeneration models in future.
At the Rheinfelden location in Karlsruhe,
we are currently building an ultramodern
coal-fired power plant (RDK 8) with
district heat decoupling system. The new
construction of the Rheinfelden hydroelectric
power plant is the biggest construction
project in the field of renewables anywhere
in Germany. Altogether, the EnBW hydroelectric
power plants generate just under 9
billion kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity
– enough to supply power for more than
5.5 million people.
When EnBW Erneuerbare Energien GmbH
was founded in 2008, we began to pool our
wide-ranging activities and expansion
strategies in the field of renewables. Alongside
its traditionally high-level commitment
to hydroelectric power, EnBW is also
increasingly involved in the areas of biomass,
photovoltaics and, in particular, the
significant expansion of wind energy capacity.
During the next few years, we intend to
successively build four offshore wind farms
in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea with
a total volume of 1,200 MW.
