Cold fermions in optical <strong>la</strong>ttices can be seen as a direct experimental<br />

implementation of this mo<strong>de</strong>l [154]. Its bosonic counterpart has already<br />

been experimentally realized [155]. Pioneering experiments have been<br />

performed for fermions. The group in Florence studied transport<br />

phenomena in optical <strong>la</strong>ttices [156]. The MIT group reported on evi<strong>de</strong>nce<br />

for superfluidity in a <strong>la</strong>ttice [157]. We already mentioned the efforts<br />

ma<strong>de</strong> by the group in Hamburg to study Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical<br />

<strong>la</strong>ttices in section 5.5, and the study of p-wave resonances in optical<br />

<strong>la</strong>ttices in Zürich in section 5.6.3. We see that optical <strong>la</strong>ttices are an<br />

exciting future project, which will lead to a merge of cold atoms and<br />

solid state physics.<br />
