into our fight agains breaking laser diodes – and helped a lot in keeping
up the spirit even when everything seems to fail.
The most important influence on out experiment certainly had Leticia
Tarruell, my fellow graduate student. It is still unbelievable for me how
many things she can do, and most of them even at the same time.
Especially when this means going hiking with Christophe, it calls for
admiration.
How to use the experiment we learned from our predecessors, especially
Thomas Bourdel and Julien Cubizolles. From them we also
learned all the tricks about how to use the facilities and whom to ask for
if you need something fast. I also would like to thank the postdocs who
were in our lab in the very beginning of my thesis, Lev Khaykovich and
Josh Milstein, as well as Servaas Kokkelmans who helped me over the
first steps of Feshbach resonances when I just entered the lab.
My successors as graduate students are Nir Navon and Sylvain
Nascimbene. Nir has already shown his theoretical and more notably
humor skills in the lab, and thus got the burden to take over the work
on the computers. Sylvain has not only shown his dancing skills to us,
but is already a fully skilled experimenter in the lab.
The social life in our laboratory did not end at its door. Our neighbors
helped a lot that we do not get depressed if the experiment is not working
again. It is them who create the charming atmosphere that our laboratory
has. I definitely appreciate the long discussions during lunch, especially
when it was about the EU milk standards. I would also like to thank the
members of my thesis comittee, Christian Miniatura, Chris Westbrook,
Tilman Pfau and Roland Combescot, who have spent their summer
vacation reading my thesis.
The technical staff also had an important impact in our system, especially
Lionel Pérenes and Patrick Giron for repairing our electronics,
Didier Courtiade for various installations in our lab. Bruno, pas-Bruno
and pas-pas-Bruno as well as Denis Jaggi made the walk to the stockrooms
always a little excitement. Vera da Costa, Linda Krikorian and
Thierry Tardieu managed the administrative work, and Nicole Neveux
helped once the normal procedures would not lead to a result.
Even though it is limited during thesis times, there still is a life
beyond the laboratory, and so I want to thank all my friends in Paris,
notably those from the Cité Universitaire, for making the time in Paris
a happy stay. Without Cynthia, I would have rather gone crazy than
writing a thesis, her help in supporting me during the time, but also
her proofreading of the english was crucial to my success in this thesis.
Thanks also to Kirk Madison, who gave me the idea and support to
come to Paris.
