This thesis would not have been possible without the help and encouragement
of many individuals, all of whom I would like to acknowledge.
First, I would like to thank my advisor, Christophe Salomon, for
having accepted me in his research group. In the four years of my
thesis, he had always an open door for me and we had a direct contact.
His unbeatable optimism often gave us the necessary hope during the
periods that our experiments failed. Christophe always cared about
the experiment, both by helping us in the lab or calling from some
mountaintop while skiing. His experience helped us to solve many
problems we had run into.
As there is a theory behind every experiment, I also needed to
understand this theory. Without Frédédric Chevy responding to all my
questions, and there were many of them, the theoretical chapter of this
thesis would just not exist. Not only was he helpful with the theory,
but also worked on the experiments, even surveilling the bakeout at
christmas. I would also like to thank him for reviewing this thesis and
pointing out most of the pitfalls.
Several postdocs were part of our group. First to mention is Jing
Zhang, with whom I did the work on p-waves and heteronuclear molecules.
In many hours of taking measurements, he gave me an interesting
insight into the Chinese way of thinking and living, from running at
seven in the morning to sleeping just after lunch. He constantly overwhelmed
me with his detailed knowledge of our system, which he
was the one who knew it best at the time, and surprised me with the
non-knowledge of how to repair a bicycle.
For more than two years Jason McKeever was part of our group. I
apreciated his great knowledge in all experimental techniques, which
he loved to share with us. He also shared his excitement for football,
leading to some shared beers in some pubs. Kilvia Magalhães joined
our group for a year. Her remarkable precision and neat labbooks will
always stay as a good example in my memory. Grainne Duffy just joined
