Grid Creative Workshop on the subject of "Lateral Thinking"
Getting off the path, to keep from
getting stuck on the way
On August 24th and 25th, 2010
quick-mix employees from the
management staff, marketing
and sales met in Bramsche for a
Grid Creative Workshop. Subject:
How can lateral thinking be used
specifi cally for our work in teams?
The focal point was the "six thinking
hat" model from the British
Physician and Author Edward de
Bono.
Seminar Director Thomas Giesen
explained the concept: "Have you
ever considered why a plate is round?
Or why taxis in London actually look
like they do? It is not always necessary
to ask such questions, but occasionally
it is practical to question things
which are always taken for granted.
And frequently we then fi nd that
many traditions lead to better results
when they are changed a bit. But
this requires people who like to swim
upstream. People capable of divergent
or lateral thinking!
At quick-mix, creativity also has a high
priority for expanding our market position
in interesting market segments.
Carsten Beier and his team agree on
this. Lateral thinkers are welcome - it
is only necessary for them to be capable
of inspiring others and motivating
them to listen.
At the “Six Thinking Hats” Seminar,
the quick-mix team learned how
parallel thinking can be used in the
team for more professional work and
greater synergy effects. At fi rst this
sounded very strange - or have you
ever heard of lateral thinking before?
- but it soon proved to be a promising
tool for communication, creativity and
intelligent work, which can quickly be
integrated into everyday situations.
The team impressively proved how
quickly this can be done. A variety of
practical subjects, important for the
team, were discussed, evaluated and
conclusions were drawn using the
hats. Two of the subjects included
were actually so controversial that
probably only the optimistic participants
- with the yellow hats - ever
believed that a creative solution could
be found. But such a practical solution
was indeed found, as the satisfi ed
faces of the participants allows us to
suspect.
Carsten Beier, Manager,
quick-mix Group: "Our company
needs innovative ideas and people to
prevail in competition. The six hats
put us in a position to get innovative
processes moving in the company and
effi ciently generate benefi ts from our
opportunities.”
White hat: Facts and information
Red hat: Feelings and emotions
Black hat: Being cautious
Yellow hat: Being positive
and optimistic
Green hat: New ideas
Blue hat: The big picture
