Community newsletter September, 2012 3 Bowls Club August 18th saw the bowls Club hold a 1 day, Associate triples event. 10 teams entered the 3 game event, kicking off with a bacon and egg breakfast. 30 players enjoyed a beautiful clear day (sunburn arms, legs and faces were a common factor at the end of the day), with 4 interstate players enjoying the bowls Club facilities. trevor and Annette O’brien, (Adelaide) enjoyed the event that much they said they will fly up next year just to play here again). this event was our first official outing for our new mats, kindly sponsored by bIS Industries. As the draw would have it, 4 teams went into the final round undefeated, and all were playing against each other. After a close finish coming down to the final bowl on the final end, we found our winners to be Shannon Gardner, Sheila Wright & Laurie Wright (granddaughter & grandparents combination). 2nd placing went to ron burt, Helen theabold and emrys powell, with 3rd to Don Watson, Dave baker & Han Ditzel. All who played had a great day and are looking forward to the next event. thanks to Amber Adams and her staff, and all the helpers who work on the breakfast, lunch and greens surrounds. All made for a great day. A close fought Final in the 2 bowl men’s triples was fought out on Sunday 19th August. ron burt, emrys powell and brenton O’brien fought back from 11-3 down hitting the lead with 4 ends to go. the final 4 ends were very close with teams trading shots through out, until George Sweeney, Wayne Stockill and Ian Gardner regained the lead and held it for a 1 shot win 22-21. the mixed pairs finalists have been decided, with Don Watson and Amber Adams to play Alan maddern and Shannon Gardner, date yet to be confirmed. Shannon is gunning for her 4th Club title of 2012 after winning the Singles, pairs and triples titles so far. the mixed Fours are still in progress with Semi Finals to be played. September 21 & 22 will see the maddern brothers Invitational mixed Fours being held. Anyone wishing to play in this event should contact the Games Director to put their name down. this is a 2 day event and is sure to be a beauty. rSVp from invited players close soon and spare positions will be filled by the first in and paid gets a spot in the draw. Good luck to the bowler having a go at District Champion of Champion events, great to see Glenden bowlers putting our club out there. Billy Cart Derby update the Billy Cart Derby will now be full steam ahead as we have just been notified that we have Public liability for the day. We still need to form a committee and a meeting will be held on monday 3rd September 6:30pm at Cotters. If you are interested in joining the committee please come along. there is still a lot to organise so we need as many volunteers as possible. We also need sponsors for the kids as this is what the day is for. the billy Cart Derby will be run under the town Club banner and we would like to thank morris Corporation as they have agreed to donate the food for race day. please if you have any queries come to the meeting and have your say, or email me at djbaker@xstratacoal.com.au Fathers keep building. Community newsletter September, 2012 4 Glenden C&K outdoor learning environment official unveiling & naidoc celebrations - 2nd August, 2012 thanks to the ladies from the isaac regional Council, we held our very own, Qld Arts Council: indigenous Photographic exhibition entitled ‘laura festival in focus’. the Glenden State School choir, which contained many of the staff’s children and centre siblings performed some outstanding songs and christened our brand new stages. their rendition of One Directions’ hit song was by far a crowd favourite! All of our special prep and primary School friends, along with their families and teachers came to see and experience our wonderful new playgrounds. No-one wanted to return to big School! Kellie perren & trudy brook from C & K Central officially opened the traditional Indigenous meeting Areas, whilst Kenny Dodd and his family from the birri people performed a blessing of the yard ceremony and entertained the crowd with traditional indigenous dancing and dreamtime stories. the children enjoyed participating in these activities and were amazed by the waterfalls and the dance troop! to reece... I never knew about happiness; I didn’t think dreams came true; I couldn’t believe in love, Until I finally met you.
