On a fine Saturday
morning, there was a
flurry of activity within
Kent Ridge Guild House
as volunteers and their
family and friends readied the 2,200
grocery bags for delivery. A sea of
striped yellow grocery bags filled the
lobby and Multi-purpose Hall, ready
to be delivered to residents living in
one and two-room flats in Tampines,
Bedok North, Pasir Ris and Hougang.
This year, NUSS had the privilege
to have Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister
for Education, flag off the delivery
convoy, and Mr Ong Ye Kung,
Adviser to Kaki Bukit GROs, visit
and speak with residents during the
delivery rounds.
An initiative started in 2010 and
organised by NUSS Community
Care Sub-Committee, Groceries on
Wheels aims to deliver grocery bags
containing basic supplies and goods
to the less privileged. While lots of
preparation and hard work preceded
the flag-off day, it was well rewarded
with 250 volunteers turning up to
lend their support and working
tirelessly for the cause on the
day itself.
Besides volunteers from NUSS,
volunteers from National University
of Singapore (NUS), Anglo-Chinese
Junior College (ACJC), Ngee Ann
Polytechnic, Lions Club, Leo Club,
Queenstown Rotary Club, NTUC
Foundation, Holcim Singapore and
family members, sponsors and wellwishers
were present to lend their
helping hands throughout. At flag-off
time, 40 cars, 10 buses and 20 shopping
trolleys were lined up and ready
to transport the goods to residents.
