contestants and guests decked out in
style at the NUSS Karaoke competition
2012 Finals held at Kent Ridge Guild
House. After rounds of heats and semifinals,
eight finalists were selected to
vie for the championship.
After one and a half
months of training and
practices, the finalists
were ready to face
the judges and have
their vocal quality, tone and pitch,
diction and clarity, rhythm and
showmanship assessed.
The choices of songs were varied
with an interesting mix of Mandarin,
Cantonese, Hokkien and English pop.
In the first round, contestants were
required to serenade the judges with
their slow numbers and in the second
round, the heat was turned up with
upbeat songs. One of the male contestants
did the mambo rock and another
hurled his glasses off the stage and
unzipped his jacket causing an adrenaline
rush among the audience. Then
there was this romantic guy who ran
down the stage during the interlude to
present a stalk of plush flower to his
girlfriend in the audience. The ladies
performed with pure vocal prowess
and from their stage presence, it was
hard to tell that most of them were
first-timers in the competition.
While the judges adjourned to
the unenviable task of assessing
the contestants, the audience were
treated to special performances and
exciting games such as the Guess-
The-Champion contest and were
asked to cast their vote for The Most
Popular Award. The highlight of the
evening was the emergence of Dr Tan

Cheng Bock who walked up the stage
with a ukulele in his hand. He began
with an anecdote of his presidential
election rally before thanking his supporters
with his talent and sincerity.

The
moment
everyone was
looking forward
to finally
arrived when
Mr Wong Ah
Long, member
of the NUSS
Advisory Panel,
took the stage
to present The
Best Newcomer
and The
Most Popular Awards. The tension
heightened as Dr Tan returned on
stage to announce the champion.
Like last year, the ladies bagged
all the top three prizes. Ballad
songstress, Ms Diana Ho was
2nd runner-up. Ms Chui Kai Ling
reclaimed her 1st runner-up position.
Janiz Goh upped her win from 2nd
runner-up last year to champion this
year, a triumph she did not expect.
“Probably top three,” Ms Goh
replies when asked about her victory.
For karaoke fans who are already
itching for the next competition,
Ms Goh speaks from her experience,
“A lot of hard work offstage. Just give
your best and the main thing is to
enjoy yourself.”
