NUSS Choir Victorious at
International Choral Festival
Pitting their vocal prowess
against 17 other competitors
from China, the Philippines,
Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia,
Thailand and Sri Lanka,
the NUSS Choir triumphed
at the International
Choral Festival.
Preparation met reward
for the NUSS Choir when
they took the plunge and
participated in the 1 st Asia
Cantate held in Phuket,
Thailand, from 15 to18 July. They
were awarded the Golden Voices
Award and topped the Senior
category by winning a silver medal.
Amidst uncertainty of what was
to come, 30 choristers made up of
22 ladies and eight gentlemen took
on the challenge with practised grace
and with one voice, sang their hearts
out, vying for the top spot. As they
stood under the spotlight, their voices
reverberated through Metropole
Hotel ballroom with gusto under the
leadership of Darius Lim, the Choir’s
Music Director, winning the judges
over with their singing.
The Choir was rewarded for
their months of practices and was
especially pleased with winning the
Golden Voices Award which they
learned is not specific to the 1st Asia
Cantate and in the past, was awarded
only to worthy choirs who meet the
criteria of winning such an award at
other competitions.
The Choir sang two songs;
the first being The Lonely Sea
written by John Parker and Vicki
Courtney and the second, a specially
commissioned song composed by
Darius entitled Gloria.
Rehearsals and practices were
held at Kent Ridge Guild House in the
preceding months of the competition,
including a weekend ‘retreat’ where
Choir members underwent many
hours of rigorous and memory-taxing
practice sessions with Darius.
However, beyond the results and
awards, the NUSS Choir forged an
unforgettable and priceless bond
with one another as well as built
friendships with members of the
other choirs at the competition,
making this win one to be well
remembered.
