A basic procedure for the evaluation of the effect of a conditioning treatment
consists of (1) measurement of the dry and wet combing characteristics
of untreated hair, (2) treatment with a conditioner followed by rinsing, (3)
measurement of the dry and wet combing characteristics of treated hair, (4)
shampooing, and (5) remeasurement of combing characteristics in order to
ascertain the removability of a treatment. This sequence of treatment, shampooing,
and measurement can be modified to include multiple treatments for
the study of formulations such as conditioning shampoos, conditioning hair
coloring products, or conditioning perms, which typically produce relatively
small lubrication effects after a single application. The data obtained in such
