I first want to thank the Nobility of Mocha Shriners for giving Lady Helen and myself the honour and the privilege of serving this year as Potentate and First Lady of Mocha Temple. I want to thank my colleagues on the Divan, elected and appointed, as well as the appointees for being a strong group to work with. It takes the combined efforts of everyone to make a Shrine year a success. I want to thank the Clubs and Units for your tremendous support and warm welcome shown to us during our visits throughout the year and to thank you for making a start to combine some of the visits required by the Potentate and the Divan during the Shrine year. Because of the support of the whole membership of Mocha, I think it has been a good year in terms of membership and donations to the Shrine Hospitals, Transportation Fund, Temple Renovations, General Operations, Mo Fund and the Mocha News. At the time of writing, these donations are at $510,000 and I have promises of more at the Fall Ceremonial. Thanks to each of you. A special thanks for the donations to the special fund for the renovations of the Upper Banquet room, the furnishings and the Mo Fund. I was very pleased with the decision of the Stated Meeting on Wed. Oct 12, 2011, to proceed with the renovations of this room. Thanks to Noble Barry O’Brien and his committee for their work in bringing in their report of recommendations and cost estimate. This project will certainly enhance the beauty of this room and make it more attractive for Shrine and non Shrine events, including banquets, Wedding Receptions and meetings. I want to thank and congratulate all the new members who joined Mocha Shriners this year. You are a great group and I know you will enjoy your membership in the Shrine. It will be a great experience for you and your ladies. Remember, you will get out of Shrinedom what you put into it. I want to make a couple of recognitions this year in Mocha- first to commend Noble Carl and Lady Pat Churchill for their generous donation of $100,000 to the new London Children’s Hospital. A contribution like that is certainly from the heart and will go a long way towards contributing to the suc- Potentate’s Report cess of that hospital and the care and treatment of children with their various ailments. Thanks Carl and Pat. I want to congratulate Illustrious Sir. Paul Shillington on receiving his Emeritus Award from Shriners International for 15 years continuous attendance at Imperial Sessions. This starts from your first year as a delegate and goes forward. We attended the Great Lakes Shrine Association Sept 13-17th. There wasn’t a lot of business done, due to a mix up in the by-laws, but I want to congratulate the Royal Scots O’ Mocha, and the Mocha Dessert Rats for their success in their respective competitions. Another good time was enjoyed on our Northern Trip. Our official visit and Ladies Night at Huron Shrine Club was Thursday Sept 22 and the Sault Shrine Club in Sault Ste Marie on Saturday Sept 24, 2011. We initiated 2 new candidates at the Sault meeting, plus 1 affiliate, along with 2 initiations in Marquette Michigan in August, 2011. The Potentate and First Lady’s Trip, “Country and Colour Tour” was a successful week-end, and I want to thank all 100 of you, who travelled with us, to make it a success. It was a very informative and fun filled trip and included the Joint Potentates night with “Ramoca and Bruce Shrine Clubs” in Owen Sound, with approximately 175 Ladies, guests and Nobles in attendance at an excellent fish dinner. We also had a fraternal visit hosted by the “Muskoka Shrine Club” at Milford Bay. There were approximately 200 Ladies, guests and Nobles in attendance at this event which included a Prime Rib Buffet dinner. At the end of the trip with various lucky draws, we had $2000 to send to the Canadian Shrine Hospital--- another example of Shriners having fun and helping kids. The nominations and elections meeting will be at our next stated meeting on December 14, 2011 at 7:30pm in the Mocha Templethis is an important meeting, so please try to be there. The installations will be on Friday January 13, at 7:30pm. Finally, on behalf of Lady Helen and myself, thanks again, to all the Nobles and their ladies of Mocha Shriners for a great year!! Thanks for your warm welcomes, friendships and hospitality at your respective club and unit visits and other Shrine functions. It has been a great experience for both of us. We want to wish each of you, from Our Shrine Family to Yours a "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year." Recorder’s Corner by Jeff Brown Well, we have seen the end of summer and the onset of fall. The Divan has started its fall visitation schedule and has a busy calendar for Official Visits and Installations over the next few months. By now, those who attended the Stated Meeting on October 12th will have heard the presentation regarding the redevelopment of the upper banquet hall here at Mocha. It is an expensive but a much needed project and we all hope the Clubs & Units will get behind this as you did for the M.S.P.O.T.S. project. We’re not talking about a million dollars this time but there is still more needed to get the job done. Hopefully more donations will come in at the Fall Ceremonial on November 5th and again at the Spring Ceremonial in 2012. “Let’s All Pull Together” on this one. I am a very passionate Shriner and have, on occasion let that passion creep into my dealings with individuals as well as with our Clubs & Units. But because of my passion, I believe we all need a reminder to follow our Imperial bylaws, our Mocha bylaws, the mission and vision of Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children (SHC) to stay healthy as an organization into the future. We are not a “Service Club” nor should we act as one. Our purpose and goal is a single focus; support Shriners Hospitals with time, talent and means to benefit the children that need our assistance. It is not for the purpose of raising money for Ronald MacDonald House or for Canadian Breast Cancer Research or other very worthwhile health or medical causes. We can all support those causes as citizens of the world but not “under the fez”. Several incidents have happened recently that have upset me personally as I’m sure it has the other members of the Divan. Nobles, we have to be aware that wearing the fez while soliciting money for other charities indicates to the public that we, as Shriners, are endorsing a particular charity as if they were our own. Nobles, they are NOT! If you participate in fund raising for other charities (which you have every right to do) DO NOT wear your fez while doing it. As Shriners we also feel the need to help some local children and although not specifically allowed in Shrine bylaws, it is recognized that assistance to children in need in our local communities is a good investment overall. But we must ensure that these donations do not become the sole reason or the major reason that your Club or Unit raises money. Once I was asked for some guidelines on what percentage of total donations should go to local causes in our communities and I responded that it should probably fall in the range of 10 – 25% whereby the 10% would apply if the total amount of annual donations by your Club or Unit is high and up to 25% if your Club or Unit only donates a small amount annually. Remember, that our mission is to support Shriners Hospitals for Children which also includes the Temple Transportation account which is considered to be part of “Hospital Money”. The Imperial Session in Denver brought about several changes to the Imperial bylaws and I have been busy comparing notes on our own bylaws to make the necessary changes. This has not been done for a few years so I am playing “catch-up” to ensure our byaws are compliant with Imperial. For your information, changes to Imperial Bylaws that impact on Temple bylaws DO NOT have to be passed by the Temple membership. However, Imperial does expect that the changes will be documented and a fresh request for Imperial approval be sought annually, as needed. Once the approval has been received, a new edition of the Mocha Bylaws will be circulated to every member. One of the changes that occurred in Denver was the approval to allow for “ELECTIONEERING” by candidates for elected office. However, the terms of the bylaw amendment are so restrictive that I’m not sure there won’t be more violations happening in the future than have happened in the past. The new amendment specifically allows for a Noble seeking an elected office to disperse information about HIS QUALIFICATIONS ONLY as they may relate to the post he is seeking. He can use standard mail or e-mail to accomplish that but cannot ask for your vote, hand out gifts or spend money on his campaign. He must also NOT USE the spreading of his information by or through Shrine Clubs or Units as a mass mailing either in hard copy or electronically. If any Nobles are considering running for elected office and are unsure how the new regulations may affect them, please contact me for clarification and assistance, as required. Remember that the December 14th Stated Meeting is also our annual election night and you need to show your 2011 dues card for admittance to this important meeting. The 2012 budget will be presented at that meeting for approval. Our world, as well as our fraternity is changing and we must not be afraid to change with it. If we all pull together, the job will be much easier. With the upcoming Christmas Season approaching, on behalf of my lady Lynne and myself, I would like to wish everyone a safe and healthy holiday season.
