Whereas direct benefits in terms initial cost reduction are not guaranteed, better identification of the target group with project outcomes and more careful maintenance can be expected in the long run. The qualitative value of projects results is likely to be higher. The course will present and discuss arguments for participation, analyse the ‘latter of citizen’s participation’ in a number of case studies, and introduce a catalogue of participation tools and methods. 6 Learning outcomes Participants will learn to • Understand and value participatory processes in different urban planning instances • Be aware of risks of pseudo participatory procedures and arguments • Refer to a number of successful participatory ‘best practice’ experiences • Select and apply the appropriate participatory methods from a ‘tool kit’ of participation instruments 7 Instructional methods Lecture, literature review, game, field work, case studies, exercises 8 Course Form Seminar 2.3.3 Page 1
