6 Learning outcomes At the end of the course, the students will
Better understand sociological, historical, political and
ethological interrelations
• Know about the difference in social relations in
cities and urban life around the world.
• Be familiar with some important theories and
approaches that social scientists have used to try to
make sense of these complex places and
interactions.
• Be able to relate this understanding to urban
diversity and the interaction of race, class and
gender and issues of equity, safety, housing, and
quality of life.
• Be prepared to maintain a global vision that looks at
urban life in global context and understands local
issues in this broad light.
• Understand the common challenges of cities
around the world and the particular forms this takes
on each continent.
• May be able to contribute to plans and models for
remaking cities and urban life into more satisfying
communities.
7 Instructional methods Students will complement the information obtained in
the lectures through own reading, which they will
reflect in form of short literature reviews. They will
demonstrate their understanding of the subject in form
of a written exercise.
