Introduction �is project sought to better understand the state of knowledge about migrant smuggl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Asia</strong>. For present purposes, <strong>Asia</strong> was de�ned to <strong>in</strong>clude fourteen countries: Afghanistan, Cambodia, Ch<strong>in</strong>a, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, S<strong>in</strong>gapore, Sri Lanka, �ailand and Viet Nam. In particular, this project sought to understand two key questions: �� What <strong>in</strong>formation do we already have from exist<strong>in</strong>g research that sheds light on the <strong>in</strong>cidence, nature and mechanics of migrant smuggl<strong>in</strong>g? �� What are the critical gaps that should be �lled by future research? Answer<strong>in</strong>g these questions, even for fourteen countries is an ambitious undertak<strong>in</strong>g. It requires an exam<strong>in</strong>ation not only of the literature on migrant smuggl<strong>in</strong>g as it relates to each of the fourteen countries but also of the literature on related issues, such as tra�ck<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> persons and irregular migration. It also requires an exam<strong>in</strong>ation of the literature about transit and dest<strong>in</strong>ation countries. �is is precisely what was undertaken for this project. �e research methodology followed by this project, a systematic literature review, is described <strong>in</strong> the preced<strong>in</strong>g chapter <strong>in</strong> this report. �is review identi�ed 154 sources that shed light on the topics under exam<strong>in</strong>ation. �is chapter is based on an exam<strong>in</strong>ation of each of these 154 sources from the perspective of answer<strong>in</strong>g the follow<strong>in</strong>g questions: �� How are migrant smuggl<strong>in</strong>g, tra�ck<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> persons and irregular migration conceptualized !#70'4&%*8#9':*';#$
