10 ABBEY ON THE RAILS Abbey on the rails Continuing in the rail enthusiast tradition of the late Fr Leonard Jackson (d. 1999), and building on his collection, the Monastery West Wing has seen the creation of the St Laurence Railway Company – a large “OO” scale model railway devised by Monastic Controller, Fr Kentigern Hagan. Its centrepiece is the city of Ampreford, with its Cathedral, shopping centre and school. A freight yard also provides special siding and warehouses for Ampleforth Abbey products The Great Western style branch terminus serves the village of Western Magna and its castle. Finally, a second branch terminus is based at Jackson St Leonard. Many businesses in the three population centres are named after members of the Community e.g. The Lewis-Vivas Interior Design Studio, Dobson’s Newsagents, The Haigh Gallery and The Cramer Library. Saturday afternoons and holiday times see regular rail running sessions as an opportunity for Community recreation. Further ideas and additions are always welcome.
Leyland - latest venue for parish monastic gathering Ampleforth monks serving on our various parishes meet regularly (normally thriceyearly.) Such meetings, chaired by Fr Abbot, offer an opportunity to pool experience and enjoy each other’s company. This February’s gathering in Leyland included a report on Fr Abbot’s recent visit to Zimbabwe and on the Monastery of Christ the Word. Discussion then turned to specifically parish-related items. The latter included a report on parish property issues from David Read, Estate Manager at Ampleforth. Monks and others present included Fr Bonaventure Knollys (Ampleforth Village), Julia Brooke (PA to Fr Abbot), Fr Damian Humphries (Osmotherley), Fr Gordon Beattie (Parbold), Fr Leo Chamberlain (Easingwold) and David Read (Estate Manager). 11 LEYLAND- LATEST VENUE FOR PARISH MONASTIC GATHERING
