New bid for drivers ‘go slow’ PAGE TEN Thursday, January 17th, 2013 Three properties targeted by burglars Following several calls for action by parish councils, a new bid to slow speeding Selby motorists down could be launched by the county council. Members of North Yorkshire County Council will meet next week to discuss the possibility of introducing new signs following calls by parish councils for action to tackle the issue of speeding drivers travelling through villages in the district. Temporary vehicle activated signs (VAS), are set to be implemented on roads in rural communities, where the parish council has raised residents fear of drivers speeding past their homes. The signs display the speed limit and alert speeding drivers when they are going too fast. They are set to be used not only at well-known accident blackspots with a record of speed related accidents, but also in areas with a high demand for temporary speeding signs. It is believed that two solar powered signs will be available for each of the seven districts in North Yorkshire, including Selby, at a cost of £2,500 each. North Yorkshire County Council's corporate director for business and environmental services, David Bowe, said: "Speeding traffic is a major concern for local communities in the county. "They will be used in one parish for a maximum of six weeks before returning to the community for three months on a rotational basis throughout the year. "The VAS will be suitable for 30 miles per hour and 40 mile per hour sites as the displayed speed limit reminder can easily be changed to suit." The issue will be discussed by members of North Yorkshire County Council's Ryedale Area Committee at its meeting next week. £500 booze haul from superstore A trolley of alcohol valuing over £500 was stolen from Morrison's in Selby recently. A gentleman was seen with other men pushing a trolley full of alcohol out of the store on Market Cross, at around 3pm on Wednesday, January 9. Police are now awaiting for CCTV footage from the store, but are urging anyone with any information to come forward and help them with their enquiries in the meantime. The first home to be targeted by unsuccessful burglars was on Ivy Close in Carlton. The homeowners disturbed the offenders shortly before 3am on Thursday, January 10. Ashley Gill-Webb, 34, hurled the projectile after aiming a tirade of foul-mouthed abuse at runners in the build-up to the 2012 Men's 100m final. He had managed to enter the Olympic Stadium simply by waving an expired ticket at officials. Security staff and enraged members of the Dutch Olympic team, including judo champion Edith Bosch, hauled Gill-Webb out of the stadium after the incident. When he was arrested, he insisted he was Scottish actor Alan Cumming, who has appeared in James Bond and X-Men films, and signed his police statement AJ Cumming. He claimed his bipolar disorder meant he could remember nothing of events last August 5, but he was convicted after a trial at Stratford Magistrates' Court. District Judge William Ashworth said CCTV evidence of him checking to see if he was being watched before throwing the Heineken bottle proved he knew what he was doing. He said: 'The video evidence in my view clearly shows Mr Gill-Webb checking to see if he is under observation before throwing the bottle. 'I am sure he was making an effort to check if he was being watched. 'He was acting rationally and wrongly, with the intention to cause harassment, alarm and distress to the competitors.' Gill-Webb will be sentenced on February 4, but the judge said the harshest sentence he would impose would be a community order. 'I make that assurance because I am sure this case has been an extreme strain on Mr Gill-Webb's family,' he added. Two expert witnesses had previously disagreed over whether he had formed the intention to commit the offence. They accepted he was suffering a state of mania, which his defence said continued when he was interviewed by police the next day. during the incident, but no entry was gained to the property as the homeowners disturbed the offenders in action when they woke up and went downstairs to investigate. At around the same time, a property in The Chestnuts at Hensall was attacked. The occupants of the property were also disturbed at around 3am on Thursday, January 10, as they were woken up by loud noises. They found that the kitchen window frame had been damaged but no entry had been gained by the offenders. A couple of days later a property in Sherburn was also targeted by potential burglars who threw a large object through the double-glazed conservatory window. Gill-Webb had made his way into an exclusive area of the packed stadium on the night of the 100m final, where the Dutch Olympic squad were watching the race. Judo bronze medalist Ms Bosch, heard him yell 'I want you to lose, you are bad, you are an a**ehole' at Bolt in the lead up to the race. In a statement read to the court, she said she had seen him make a throwing motion just before a bottle landed on the track. Enraged by what she had seen, she confronted him as he tried to flee the scene and pushed him backwards to stop him leaving. 'He moved to walk away but at that point I confronted him and said: 'dude, are you crazy?'', she said. 'I was angry at what he had done, it was so disrespectful. I was flabbergasted.' Gill-Webb had managed to tricked his way through several layers security by brandishing an expired ticket, the court heard. 'He was waving an old ticket in front of people to get past security', said prosecutor Neil King. 'He thought he wanted to get into the Olympics and could by waving this ticket.' The key issue in the case was whether he intended to cause harassment, alarm and distress to those around him. Dr Richard Latham, a consultant psychiatrist called by the prosecution, said: 'He made the decision to go to the Olympic Park, he thought about it and made the decision to go there. 'I don't think he was unable to form a intention, he was able to form the intention to do lots of purposeful things.' Bereaved man behaved badly after drinking spree A bereaved man has pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly after being caught being verbally abusive outside the Black-A-Moor Head pub in Finkle Street just before Christmas. David Backhouse, 29, who lives on Bellerby Road in Skellow, near Doncaster, admitted to the offence which happened at about 3.10am on Saturday, December 22. Police officers had been called to the pub after the landlord had reported a disturbance involving several other people, when Mr Backhouse was described as 'being difficult' after he was told he could not re-enter the pub and was told to go home. When Mr Backhouse was told he was not allowed back inside he said: "I pay my taxes, this is a disgrace," and told the police officers that they "were clearly bullied at school" and shortly after was arrested. Speaking at Selby Magistrates' Court on Thursday, January 10, Mr Backhouse said: "All of what has been said about the incident today is new to me. Unfortunately I was drunk and very upset after my friend was killed three weeks ago. I apologise to the court and the police for all the time wasted." Chairing Magistrate, Hillary Gilbertson, said: "This sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable when people are out in public trying to have fun." Mr Backhouse was fined £150, and ordered to pay £20 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs. The incident occurred sometime between 3pm on Saturday, January 12 and 1.30am on Sunday, January 13, at a house on Eversley Court in Sherburn In Elmet. Anyone who saw anything suspicious in these areas at the times mentioned should contact North Yorkshire Police immediately on 101 or Crimestoppers on 080 555 111. But Dr Robert Adams, who cared for Gill-Webb in hospital after he was sectioned, said he did not know what he was doing. 'He was caught up in the occasion at the time, he wasn't thinking about the consequences of his actions', he said. 'He wanted to enter the Olympic Stadium, and he did it. He had the urge to enjoy himself and wanted to enter the Olympic Stadium and he didn't think of the consequences of that.' Rhiannon Crimmins, defending Gill-Webb said he acted on 'urges' and did not intend to cause alarm and distress. Gill-Webb of Cornmill Court, South Milford, North Yorks, found guilty of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress. Tesco remove burgers in ‘horse meat’ scandal Tesco's Selby branch has removed all its own-brand value burgers from its shelves following the horse-meat scare that has affected stores nationwide. The move follows the discovery of horse meat in the supermarket chain's 'every-day value' burgers supplied by Silvercrest Foods in Ireland. Burgers containing horse meat were discovered at branches in Ireland, but all stores throughout the UK have removed Tesco own-brand burgers as a precaution. A Tesco spokeswoman said yesterday (Wednesday): "All frozen products provided by Silvercrest have been removed from all Tesco stores including the branch in Selby. We apologise for any distress."
