Good signs
in defeat
Albion Sports 3
Selby Town 0
Selby Town returned to the playing field for the
first time competitively since December 1 las
Wednesday evening at Albion Sports, writs
THOMAS ARKLEY.
A first competitive game in six weeks, and only
the second under the leadership of Ian Dring, who
is beginning to put his stamp on the scene and his
players made a good fight of it against the
promotion-chasing Bradford outfit.
They started the brighter of the two and looked
the most likely to open the scoring with Albion,
who had slipped slightly in their holiday games,
pinned back in their own half for much of the first
45 minutes.
However top sides invariably find a way of
turning things around, Flaherty was denied a goal
opportunity for Sports after 20 minutes when his
effort was well saved by Nathan Smith, (right 17-
01-36 SU) the Robins’ debut keeper, and then
when Greaves upended Facey in a crowded
penalty area, it was Flaherty who rammed home
the spot kick.
The goal rocked Town briefly, but they still
finished the half well, and on the balance deserved
to be level.
The second half started evenly, but Albion were
starting to look threatening each time they had
possession. Smith was forced into several good
saves, but Albion scored a crucial second when
poor defending allowed Facey to race down the
left into the area, and shoot across Smith into the
far corner.
Now the Robins had to open up to get
something from the game and exposed themselves
at the back each time they lost the ball, but they
kept going and in a promising move down the left
Redfern got to the bye-line to cross, and although
nothing came from it the player was left in a heap
from a crunching tackle leading to a seven minute
delay, but only a caution for the home player.
Kamikaze defending by Selby in the latter stages
could well have increased the scoreline in the
Thorpe United U14s 1
Horsforth 5
The Thorpe game plan to contain
Horsforth worked perfectly in the first
half of Sunday’s game, the visitors
having lots of possession without
causing any real problems to a patched
up home outfit missing a number of
players.
Thorpe were kept pegged into their
own half for long periods, as the
Horsforth side forced a series of freekicks,
unable to find a way through the
stubborn defence.
Jamie Pickles in the Thorpe wall
blocked one set piece, the Horsforth
follow-up was blasted well over.
Lewis Griffiths and Shaun
Heselwood were both forced into good
clearances as the visitors continued to
press. Alex Ward tipped over a well
struck effort; he also claimed the ball
from the resulting corner.
hosts favour beyond a third goal late on which did
seal the win.
The lack of match practice and new players
showed in this performance. but if you take the
positives from the game there was not much
between the two sides.
Games don’t get any easier
The Robins, who had a free week after their
Tuesday postponement, have another hard task
this Saturday when they travel to Louth Town,
kick off 3pm.
It is still a getting to know you exercise for
manager Ian Dring, who has introduced several
new faces to those existing at the Rigid Group
Stadium, and there was plenty to enthuse in
defeats at Albion, and at home to Hemsworth on
Saturday, unfortunately the results went against
them and the gap at the bottom widened.
A quick throw from Jordan Todd into
Richard Buckthorpe forced Horsforth
back on a rare occasion, the latter
finding Corey Littlefield, but his ball
into Sean Hymers which split the
defence, eventually saw it recover after
Pickles was crowded out by strong
defending.
Domonik Stankiwicz and David
Melling linked well to keep Thorpe
pushing forward, Buckthorpe receiving
the ball and running at the Horsforth
defence, but once more strong
defending proved too much for the
Thorpe strikers.
Ward was then forced into a good
stop, Haydn Brown on hand to
complete the clearance and he set
Littlefield away; who held the ball up
well winning a throw-in deep in the
Horsforth half; and from Griffiths’ long
throw, he scored against the run of play.
The Thorpe players failed to follow
the same game plan in the second half
SELBY POST SPORT
and were punished with five goals
conceded.
The warning signs were always
there, and they were on terms within
minutes of the restart, a powerful run
went unchecked and an excellent strike
left Ward helpless.
Their second came moments later,
Stankiwicz exposed in defence, the
striker too strong and again an
unstoppable shot left Ward stranded.
They didn’t have long to wait for
their third as Thorpe were again caught
out by fine football, the Horsforth
strikers picking their passes and Ward
beaten for a third time.
Thorpe did relieve the pressure
briefly, Littlefield holding the ball up
well before releasing Buckthorpe who
saw his shot deflected for a corner; but
the danger was cleared from Melling’s
deflected shot.
A good through ball from Griffiths
released Hymers, his effort cleared for a
Two good
wins for
Thorpe lads
Thorpe U9 (Blue) 4, Elvington U9s 1
A boggy pitch did not deter these two sides producing a
fantastic first game of two, to start their New Year.
It was Thorpe who opened the scoring with good work
down the right by Jack Hughes, who cross found Charlie
Dutton and his first time shot found the corner.
Elvington pressed forward looking for an equaliser and
forced keeper Callum Balderson into several fine saves. On
one of those attacks, Sam Tuck broke up play then found Tyler
Matthewman for him to side step his man and hit an
unstoppable shot into the net on the counter.
With the half coming to an end, Elvington put together a
good move and well taken goal to reduce the deficit.
Thorpe came out for the second half looking to add to their
advantage with well worked moves, and it wasn’t long before
a cracking ball by Ben Hudson to Sam Oldfield saw him fire
home. With a two-goal cushion the confidence started to
show and after further pressure, Joshua Lyssens won the ball
and played it through to Oldfield who finished off giving
Thorpe a well deserved victory.
United Man of the Match: Charlie Dutton for excellent play
down the left throughout, and a well taken goal.
Thorpe (Blue) 4, Elvington U9s 1
Both teams hit top gear straight from the off in the friendly,
with end to end football which was keeping goalkeeper Luke
Matthews busy with fine saves.
It took until midway through the half for the deadlock to be
broken by Elvington.
Thorpe started determined to get the equaliser and after
much pressure, Billy Simpson picked the ball up and played
the killer ball to Elliot Wright, who placed it past the visiting
keeper. The half finished with no more goals but with plenty
of action.
The second half saw Thorpe start to dominate and a move
involving Callum Balderson getting down the line found
Corbin Purcell, who was coming in at the back post, and he
picked his spot.
Elvington looked to get back into the game, but this opened
it for Thorpe to play into the space and when Sophie Rhodes
won the ball she saw Wright and played him through for him
to take it on and collect his second of the game.
To finish off a magnificent game of football a move ending
with Sam Oldfield knocking it past the keeper and putting it
into the goal.
Man of the Match: Billy Simpson, who broke up play well,
and distributed equally so.
Second half lesson in finishing
corner; Littlefield’s corner met by
Stankiwicz who saw his shot drift just
wide.
Thorpe were then awarded an
indirect free-kick; Littlefield laying the
ball into Griffiths, who saw his
powerful strike hit the keepers legs and
bounce clear; Horsforth were quick to
break and caught the hosts lacking in
numbers at the back, and as todd
looked to have stopped the raid, the
ball fell kindly for the visiting striker to
settle the outcome.
A fine through ball from man of the
match Jordan Todd set Littlefield free,
he won and took a corner that was
headed over by Griffiths.
However the damage wasn’t over
yet, an intercepted goal-kick caught the
Thorpe players out of position,
Horsforth capitalising to score their
fifth and inflict a heavy defeat on the
home side.
local sides
The quarter finals of the Senior and
brought disappointment for most of
our teams.
Hemingbrough and Station suffered
in the Senior Challenge Cup, and
Albion Vaults and Selby Railway
suffered equally in the Junior
competition.
Brayton, Drax and Bubwith did get
through.
