Golf heaven
in the sun
Many a golfer longs to spend the
holidays putting in 18 holes a day in
sunnier climes. And many would fancy a
holiday home abroad next to a course.
The problem may be that if the rest of
the family are in tow, the attractions of
the course may not be matched by the
sort of local amenities that keep children
or partners happy. If you're a family of
golf fanatics there are several holiday
home options, such as South Africa's
Garden Route, Portugal's Algarve and Florida's fairways. But if the family needs
more, the coast with the most is still Spainʼs Costa del Sol. Victoria and James
Harrocks, from the north-west of England, bought a three-bed penthouse apartment
at Los Cortijos in Mijas. James has been a member of a golf club since he was 10,
and the couple have two boys who are both into golf big time. Los Cortijos quickly
emerged as a frontrunner - the first reason was accessibility. Both EasyJet and
RyanAir can do the trip in just two and a half hours. Next was sunshine. The Costa
del Sol has the best climate in Europe. Shirt sleeves are the order of the day in
December. And then there's golf. It has the highest concentration of golf courses in
Europe, more than 50 at the last count, of which 12 are within minutes of Los
Cortijos. But Mijas is also ideally located for sandy beaches, bars and restaurants -
and the town even boasts its own aquapark, racecourse and modern shopping
centre. There are swanky yachts and designer boutiques within a 15-minute drive to
the west, and the resort has its own heated swimming pools, gym and spa. Plus, the
properties at Los Cortijos all boast golf, sea and mountain views.
Home shopping is nothing new - we've been
getting stuff delivered to our door for decades. But
now that catalogue stores are online, do they still
win over a trip to the shops?
Convenience - The shops might close, but the
internet never does. And all this while avoiding the
crowds and the pushy sales assistants.
Transport - Home shopping saves you queueing
for hours to find a parking space, and no more
fiddling around for change for the machine.
Price comparison - There are search engines
dedicated to finding the best price for whatever item
you want, so no need to traipse from shop to shop
trying to find the best deal on that must-have item.
Try kelkoo.co.uk or pricerunner.co.uk.
Choice - Home shopping offers a choice you
simply can't find in the high street. But remember to
check the cost of delivery and the website's
overseas shipping policy. Bear in mind also that
some items are subject to duty or import VAT.
Try before you buy - Of course, you can do this
in high street stores too - but is there anything
worse than showing all your lumps and bumps to
the world while battling through a communal
changing room? Most catalogues offer a hassle-free
returns system and will give you a certain period of
time to make sure you're happy with your items.
