Top flight night
A charity darts night featuring fivetime
world darts championship semifinalist
Wayne Mardle, raise £1,380 for
charity.
Wayne 'Hawaii 5-0-1' Mardle hosted
the charity darts exhibition last week on
Friday, January 11, at Drax Sports and
Social Club.
The event was organised by Snaith
Darts and Dominoes League in
association with the Drax club and
Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, and the money
raised will go towards the
Mesothelioma UK charity.
The Mesothelioma UK Charitable
Trust is a national resource centre
dedicated to providing specialist
information about the Mesothelioma
disease.
Ticket sales and fundraising attempts
on the night reached the grand total of
£1,380, and organisers said that the
night went extremely well and Wayne
enjoyed himself.
Wayne Mardle has previously been
described as perhaps the most
charismatic and approachable
professional darts player in the world
today, and he did not disappoint on the
night as he played members of the
Snaith league and the winner of the
charity raffle and even let some of them
beat him!
Wayne also delivered a talk at the
end of the charity event before taking
questions from the 140 strong audience.
When competing professionally he
was known as “Hawaii 5-0-1” and was
the most sought after professional darts
entertainer on the circuit by fans,
tournament directors and TV
executives.
He has been a runner up at The
World Matchplay, a losing finalist twice
at the Las Vegas Dessert Classic and a
semi finalist at the World
Championships on five separate
occasions!
More recently, the 'larger than life
character' has won praise from all
quarters for his analytical and
presenting roles for Sky TV at the World
Darts Championship and at The
McCoys Premier League.
He has been compared with the late
Sid Waddell by The Times and recently
appeared on television commentating
on this year’s PDC World
Championship.
Tesco to prove every penny
counts in cancer campaign
Staff at the Tesco store in Selby are hoping members of the
public will join them and take part in a special fundraising
weekend to support Cancer Research UK's life-saving work.
Residents and customers are invited to go along to the store
and get involved in fundraising activities with staff on
Saturday, February 2, and Sunday, February 3.
The weekend is part of the Every Penny Counts scheme,
where volunteering collections will take place at 800 Tesco
stores around the UK throughout the fundraising weekend.
Cancer Research UK and the Tesco store in Selby is now
looking for enthusiastic and friendly people to come down to
their local store to help out for just three hours - or more if
they prefer.
All money raised during the weekend, which coincides
with a fortnight of fun superhero themed fundraising by
Tesco staff, will contribute to the £10 million record target that
Tesco are aiming to hit for Cancer Research UK, Tesco Charity
of the Year.
This will help support research into improving the early
diagnosis and detection of cancer, helping to ensure more
people receive treatment at a time when it is more likely to be
successful.
Caroline Silke, Cancer Research UK head of corporate
fundraising said: “As a charity we are dependent on the
support of volunteers to raise money to help fund our
groundbreaking research.
"The Every Penny Counts weekend is a fantastic
opportunity to have fun and be a hero by helping to raise
thousands of pounds towards our life-saving work to help
more people beat cancer.
“As well as raising vital funds you’ll also be doing your bit
to raise awareness of Cancer Research UK’s work within your
local community.”
The money raised by Every Penny Counts will be spent on
supporting 32 early diagnosis and detection research projects
in local communities across the UK.
Tesco and Cancer Research UK also aim to raise awareness
of the signs and symptoms of the disease and reduce people’s
anxiety about cancer.
If you would like to sign up to take part in Every Penny
Counts, you can do so online by visiting
Arsonist
PAGE FORTY SEVEN
found
carrying
lighter
A 15-year-old boy, who is currently
awaiting sentence for arson, appeared in
Selby Magistrates' Court last week, after
his teacher discovered he was in
possession of a lighter at school.
The boy, who lives in the Selby area,
is due to appear at Sheffield Crown
Court on January 25 charged with three
counts of attempting to commit arson
with intent to endanger life, damaging
and destroying property on Wednesday,
November 30, 2011.
He pleaded guilty to the offence of
breaching his bail condition of not to
possess a lighter at Selby Magistrates'
Court on Thursday, January 10.
The lighter was found on him on
Monday, January 7, when a support
worker had suspected him of smoking
and ordered him to empty his pockets.
Prosecuting, Sandra White, said: "He
was arrested at about 8.10am this
morning and given a stern warning. He
is aware of his bail conditions as he has
had them in place for well over a year
now."
Keith Haggerty, his defending
solicitor said: "This is the first time he
has been in breach of his bail
conditions. I understand smoking
among pupils is an endemic problem
and he had been outside smoking with
others."
Presiding Magistrate, Hilary
Gilbertson, said: "It seems you have
done quite well at sticking to your bail
conditions so far. The offences you are
due to be sentence on are very serious.
You must do everything possible to cooperate
with the authorities. You need to
be reminded of these conditions as you
do not want to make the situation any
worse, do you understand? You are very
lucky you have come here with your
grandparents who are supporting you."
The boy was re-bailed on the same
conditions, awaiting the hearing at
Sheffield Crown Court.
