Man of the Match for Cliffe Reserves, aaron lees, on the ball in a
tussle with a Tadcaster Town opponent in his sideʼs 2-0 home
defeat in Minster Engineering League Section ʻDʼ on Saturday.
Brayton Belles Res. 2
Huddersfield Tn. Res. 1
The Belles reserves entertained a
strong Huddersfield side, in their first
game of 2013, a team who had only
lost one game this season.
But whilst their opponents had the
lion’s share of possession, it was the
Belles who scored with their first attack
when a through ball from Laura
Whitaker was collected by Jodie Cliff
who calmly beat the keeper from close
range. After 30 minutes keeper
Michelle Morton made what was one
of the best of a string of great saves,
low down to her left and the half closed
at 1-0.
As the second half progressed the
visitors pressed forward and scored an
equaliser, but the Belles showed their
resilience and hit back immediately,
when a shot from Anya Limbert struck
the bar and came out for Jodie Cliff
who, despite seeing her first shot saved
by the keeper, followed up and put the
ball in the net.
The closing stages saw siege
conditions around the home goal, but
the Belles maintained their shape,
commitment and effort and held on for
a well deserved win.
Player of the match went to keeper
Michelle Morton, who was ably
supported by all her team mates.
Belles, with a previous defeat since
the New Year, hoped to come back
strong against yet another tough team,
however as the game kicked off Belles
received an early wake-up call with
Malet scoring within the first minute.
Belles fought back strong though,
Reserves rue
their missed
chances
Cliffe FC Reserves 0
After the lion’s share of goalscoring chances,
Cliffe FC Reserves lost 2-0 to Tadcaster Town
Reserves in Saturday’s Section ‘D’ Minster
Engineering league clash, writes MALCOLM
BRYCE.
Dave Hebson’s side will feel unlucky to
come away without a point from a game that
saw them hit the woodwork at least twice and
numerous near-misses gone begging.
It was a special left foot shot that opened the
scoring for Tadcaster before half-time, rifling
into the top corner before the break to give the
visitors the lead.
Ben Rawson came close a couple of times for
Cliffe, and Aaron Lees was a thorn in the
Hasselman to give them a fighting
chance.
Exhausted Belles still kept the game
alive, Emily Morton, who was captain
and leading by example kept Brayton
in the game pulling off numerous
amazing saves that no other keeper
would have saved.
After half an hour Belles made their
first change swapping Beth Vickers for
Lauren Thompson at left back. With
fresh legs in defence Belles defended
well and just to strengthen the back
four another change two minutes later
with Flow Brown making way for
Sarah Huggins in centre back.
The game still level as it approached
half time. but Emily Morton suffered a
boot to the face when coming out for a
corner, she still carried on and kept the
team spirit high.
At half time the Belles made a
visiting side with his hard work down the right
wing.
Cliffe continued to carve out chances during
the second half, calling the keeper into action a
few times also testing the woodwork a couple
of times – Rawson and Nathan Parker the
unlucky ones.
Town did make it 2-0 in the second half, a
solo effort that took a horrible bounce in-front
of the keeper to double the lead.
A frustrating day all round for Hebson’s
side, including the returning Jay Grundy, who
couldn't take advantage of a couple of closerange
chances, on another day they could have
won the game comfortably – not taking
anything away from Tadcaster Town who took
their chances neatly either side of the interval.
Unbeaten run continues for Featherstone
Featherstone Colliery 2
Knaresborough Town 0
Featherstone Colliery won for the 12th
game in a fantastic spell that has seen
them lose only one game in 15 as visitors
Knaresborough were sent packing in
Saturday’s West Yorkshire League
Division Two clash.
In reality it was their first game since
December 1, and due to illness and work
had to put a team together just before the
start.
They made the brighter start and were
unlucky not to take the lead 30 seconds in
to the game with good passing and fine
link up play involving Gaz Ward, Kieron
O’Toole and Kyle Macdonald that saw
Sam Harrison go close.
The visitors were allowed back in,
perhaps as a result of a lack of match
activity and for half an hour, they
commanded things but Featherstone
survived.
Macdonald and Michael Seed found
loads of room down both flanks and
numerous crosses were played into the
danger area once they were back on track,
and the pressure finally showed as Sam
Harrison added to his tally for the season.
Town looked for an equaliser, but Luke
Frankland, having his best game of the
season, commanded his box and snuffed
out any aerial threat from the North
Yorkshire outfit.
Featherstone were now completely on
top Simon Davis moving the ball around
well and causing Towns back line all
kinds of problems Scott Ellam seeing a
shot tipped on to the bar, Ward seeing a
similar shot also tipped over the pressure
continued to mount and Davis was
awarded with Featherstone’s second.
Illness hit the team and Ward had to be
substituted for Pearson, who had rushed
from Manchester Airport and soon after
Ellam had to come off with tight
hamstrings handing a debut for reserve
team player James Dunn, who credited
himself well.
Town looked a stronger team than last
time the two sides met and the three new
players signed before the game looked
good additions.
Manager Iain Macdonald said after the
game: ‘’An hour before kick off things
were so bad I had to name myself on the
bench, Pearson rang me from the airport
and O named him on the bench.
“the lads played well and it was a good
performance over all but you could see
they had not played for five week.’’
This report may not have been
intended for us, but we are only too
pleased to feature anyone from the
edge of the Selby Post circulation area,
and indeed those who don’t from
within, as well. Sports Ed.
Great scalp for Belles’ reserves
tactical change with Lauren Thompson
switching to right wing and Ellie
Comerford taking the left back role and
not too later on Flow Brown replaced
Meghan Crossland in centre mid field.
Both teams still fought hard before
the Belles conceded midway through
second half.
After 70 minutes, Belles made
another change with Ellie Comerford
introduced for Beth Vickers at left back,
together with Meghan Crossland
replacing Georgia Bromley In centre
mid followed by Flow dropping in
centre back.
However, five minutes later, Belles
conceded with the final score ending 3-
1 to Malet.
For the second week running Emily
Morton received player of the match
for her yet again outstanding
performance.
Lively start
as Pool
returns after
break
Week eight of the ETS (UK) Ltd
Monday Night Pool League, saw us
reach the end of the first third of this
season with some cracking matches on
paper between old foes and local
rivals.
The two top ties were played at the
Griffin where The Griffin took on
Olympia and Griffin Sharks played host
to The Fox. The Olympia team didn't get
off to a great start, only winning 1 out of
the first 8 frames before sharing the final
4 to finish with a 9-3 loss. This opened
the door for the Sharks to leapfrog them
in the league table if they could get a
good result against the Fox. It was a
match that went one way and then the
other with the scores being tied at 1-1, 2-
2, 3-3 and 5-5, however it was the Sharks
that then took the last two frames to win
the match 7-5 and secure 3rd place in the
league at the one third mark.
It was a similar story out at The New
Inn (Barlby) where they were playing
host to Griffin Destroyers, with the
match being tied at 2-2, 3-3 and 5-5.
Danny Harrison then took the
Destroyers onto the hill before John
Lister levelled it up again to make the
final score 6-6.
The final match of the week was the
battle of Hemingbrough with the Crown
taking on the Fox and Pheasant and it
was the Crown that came away as 9-3
winners.
Finally, as we have now all played
each other once, the handicaps in the
handicap league will be reassessed so as
to make it a lot fairer between ALL the
teams and give everyone a chance of
walking away with the title.
Riccall United returned to winning
win at Copmanthorpe on Saturday.
They move into fifth place courtesy
of an own goal and a late winner from
Andy Addison.
