School raises charity cash
Pupils at The Read
School in Drax have
been busy raising
money for The Hearing
Dogs for Deaf People.
Students of all ages
raised a total sum of
£485 by selling baked
goods at their Harvest
Festival. Year 6 students
took part in an auction in
which some of the
goods were sold.
In a special assembly,
the students were
treated to a talk about
hearing dogs by Lucy
Ward, who brought in
Chloe, a black labrador
who has just finished
her training.
Chloe has been
specially trained to help
a deaf child. Children
were full of questions for
her, and Lucy was only
too happy to answer.
Lucy explained how
Chloe can be lifechanging
for a deaf
person. "For example, if
a fire alarm was going
off, she would lay down
on the floor to alert them
to the dangers."
"To wake a deaf person
up, Chloe would tug at
the edge of the duvet,
taking it off them."
One child was desperate
to know whether the
dogs can go into
schools. "We tend not to
take them into schools.
Everybody would want
to stroke them and not
do their work!"
Head girl Amy Lister is
pictured presenting the
cheque to Lucy Ward
from The Hearing Dogs
for Deaf People.
