My dear readers, 

Dastar is an integral part of Sikh Dharma. It 

is wisely said that a man's personality is projected 

by Dastar, Guftar & Raftar. Dastar connotes dress, 

Guftar-good communication skill and Raftar 

means the speed or quickness of doing any job. 

Dastar is a special gift given by the tenth Guru to 

his Sikh to cover the hair which are a part of the 

five Kakars. Pagri is a symbol of respect and 

dignity in our culture. Sardar Ajit Singh uncle of 

Shaheed Bhagat Singh led a Kisan movement 

against the Brithish Rulers by singing the popular 

patriotic song :-

Mughal rulers had declared that the Dastar 

was a symbol of Sardari and only rulers (Muslims) 

could wear it. Others (non-muslims) must show 

respect to a person wearing a Dastar thereby 

feelings of inferiority were created among the 

non-muslims. 

The creation of Khalsa by the tenth guru on 

the Baisakhi day of 1699 transformed the Sikhs 

into Sant-Sipahies and the Guru wore Kalgi on his 

Dastar to show that his stature is higher than the 

Emperor as he had also the power of the Akal 

Takht established by the sixth Guru Hargobind 

Sahib Ji. The new awakening with the Shakti of 

Amrit, along with the sacrifices of Gurus and 

Sahibzadas made the Sikhs fearless and conscions 

of their supreme duty to uproot the corrupt rulers

The Grace of Turban

Singh is well known to us. 

The number of Sikhs at the time of Maharaja 

Ranjeet Singh was more than one crore which 

came down to 17 lakh 15 thousand in the census of 

1881 A.D. Brithish empire encouraged the Sikhs to 

become Christians to gain benefits. Seeing to this 

danger, Singh Sabha movement did a yeomen 

service to revive the spirit of Sikhism. 

Sikhs took part in first and second world wars 

with their Dastars. They showed great feats of 

courage and bravery thereby earned high praise of 

the foreigners. Many members of the Gadhar Party 

(Party formed in USA to liberate the country) like 

Baba Sohan Singh Bhakna (President of the Gadhar 

Party), Sant Baba Vaiskha Singh and Baba Jawala 

Singh were devout Sikhs. Baba Gurdit Singh of 

Kama Gata Maru fame was highly religions. 

S.Partap Singh Kairon, Giani Zail Singh, Sardar 

Hukam Singh, Baba Kharak Singh, Mastar Tara 

Singh, Bhai Veer Singh, Prof. Pooran Singh, 

Dr.Manmohan Singh felt/feel proud with their 

Dastars. 

Gurbax Singh Preet Lari-a noted writer 

studied in USA. Once he was asked to remove his 

turban while entering a cinema hall to which he 

refused and left the place. He raised the issue in the 

Press and got support from the people to keep his 

faith. 

There are many instances when the Turban 

issue erupted in UK, Canada and now is a issue in 

France. The intelligent and progressive Sikhs 

raised their voice against this attack on their 

religion in a logical & dignified way. The credit

goes to the rational thinking people of those 

countries also for giving support to the Sikh 

community and the fair functioning of the 

governments for accepting the demand. 

S.Gurbaksh Singh Malhi has become the member 

of Parliament of Canada for the third time. He has 

raised the stature of the Sikhs so high that Sikh 

religious function in the presence of Guru Granth 

Sahib was held in the parliament. Sardar A.S. 

Chhatwal is very close to Bill Clinton ex-President 

of America. He and other Sikhs organised Sikh 

religious function in White House in which 

president George W. Bush also took part. 

The Sikhs in other countries are occupying 

esteemed positions in business and services. They 

are highly respected and are playing a vital role in 

the economic growth of various countries. This is 

due to the capabilities of the Sikhs as well as the 

healthy socio-political system of those countries. 

It is their excellent performance, good conduct, 

hard work and great achievements that inspired 

Queen Elizabeth and Prime Minister of Canada to 

pay obeisance at Harmandar Sahib. The reverence 

for a Faith by people of other faiths is entirely 

dependent on the level of the good conduct and 

high achievements by the followers of the Faith.

Sikhs in Kenya always kept their Faith intact and 

inspired the Sikhs in U.K. to keep their turbans. 

When the people from U.K., Canada and USA 

come to India, they find that the Sikh religion is 

better practiced in those countries than in Punjab. 

This is a great challenge for all well meaning 

people. The need to guide the youth is most urgent. 

Some of the steps needed are :- 

1. Make the education affordable as well as of 

good standard. 

2. The teachers need to do their duty honestly 

and become role models for the youth. 

3. Political leaders should work for the

path to the people (Sangat) by their good virtuous 

lives. 

5. Economic conditions of the people be 

improved. Lavish expenditure on marriages be 

curbed. 

6. Free religious literature be distributed to 

make the people (especially the youth) to know 

their rich heritage and the importance of the 

Dastar by which a Sikh is known as the Sardar.

Santa-Banta Jokes get a befitting reply 

A pocket sized booklet had been published 

by 'Ideas' situated at Rasik Book House in Matunga 

in Mumbai. The racist overtones of the publisher 

cleverly inserted the word sardar into the 

prevalent Santa-Banta dialogue thus making the 

confrontation direct and clear. In fact there are 

many direct references about sardars and Sikhs in 

this booklet. 

The Sikh Media and Culture Watch took 

note of this publication and complained to 

Maharashtra Minority Commission (MMC). The 

MMC decided to book the culprits under Section 

295(A) of the Indian Penal Code. This Section deals 

with hurting religious sentiments with deliberate 

and malicious intent. This was revealed by Vice 

chairman of MMC Mr. Abraham Mathai. Since then 

the publishers of the booklet are on the run.

American Sikh gets apology 

Yuba city in USA has large population of 

Sikhs and they constitute the most progressive 

peach farmers of the area. A 19 year old Mr. Harvir 

Singh of Yuba City, appeared for the interview in 

the police department. His interview was 

conducted by Kim Slade, the Director of Yuba City. 

He was told that his turban was acceptable but the 

beard did not conform to uniform standards of the 

police department. Mr. Harvir Singh instead of 

agreeing to the condition and getting the 


appointment for the job, got in touch with SALDEF - 

the. Sikh American Civil Rights and Advocacy 

Organization. 

On intervention of SALDEF and its 

representation in the case before the City Police 

Chief Mr. Doscher, latter was verily convinced. He, 

then, in his capacity as the Chief of Yuba City police 

department delivered formal letter of apology for 

having denied employment to Harvir Singh 

wherein he stated "We Yuba City police department 

have no policy which precludes an employee of the 

sikh faith from wearing a turban or sporting a beard 

or possession of a kirpan during their employment 

with us. Please accept this as an unintentional 

oversight by one of my staff officers, which I take 

responsibility for. I can assure you there is no 

misunderstanding any longer?

Waning RSS 

The Gujarat Carnage carried out at the behest 

of RSS with Narender Modi's governmental 

backing has put the RSS in the back seat. In an 

assessment of the sullenness in RSS and its image 

in the public at large, the leaders recently took 

stock of the damage to RSS. It was found that post- 

Gujarat carnage had instilled disappointment in 

Sangh leaders. RSS that often keeps a count of its 

shakhas suddenly faced the reality of as many as 

4,500 shakhas closed in the year 2006. 

In an effort to take stock of the situation at 

Lucknow, when the big wigs in RSS sat together, 

they realized that the set back it had suffered post- 

Godhra is comparable to the situation it had faced 

post-Mahatma's assassination and thereafter post- 

Babri Masjid demolition. 

In the assessment of the situation, RSS 

thinkers only hope and pray that people would 

forget Gujarat carnage as the two earlier incidents 

are similarly not very prominent in their memory 

now. Some of the leaders were in fact upbeat on 

observation of the fact that RSS is gaining ground 

as they are no longer unwelcome at embassies of 

many countries!

Pak Sikhs want to marry in India 

Being a closely knit group in Pakistan, the 

Sikhs there welcome the idea of marrying their 

children in the Sikh families in India. Then why is 

this not happening? Mostly because of the 

stringent visa rules that had prevailed so far. 

Whenever they had felt difficulty in finding

suitable matches for their children, they would 

marry the children with the distant relatives 

within Pakistan. But no family ever married their 

children outside their religion. Owing to the visa 

restrictions in India, the Sikhs in Pakistan easily 

married their children in the western countries 

where there are no such visa restrictions with the 

visa restrictions between India & Pakistan eased. 

We now hope to see more marriages solemnised 

between the sikh families a cross the border.

L K Chawla to take on medical stores in rural 

Pun Punjab jab in Hindi! 

Laxmi Kanta Chawla, the Health and Family 

Welfare minister of Punjab, laid down the 

priorities of her ministry. In addition to the routine 

(read never met) facilities to be created for the 

poorest of the-poor, she has also emphasized on 

breaking the doctor-diagnostic lab nexus (which 

seems too settled for her tenure to handle)! 

One significant observation of Chawla lies in 

preventing medical stores from selling narcotics. 

Though this is the most important area to pursue, 

but sadly, nothing concrete has been heard since 

its announcement even at the level of policy 

making. Though we appreciate her agenda, 

however, for her first preparation that she would 

be well advised to undertake, before she sets out to 

stopping narcotics sale in rural medicine shops, 

she might better join some Punjabi speaking 

classes, she was the only one who failed to speak in 

Punjabi even during the swearing in ceremony of 

the ministers of the state of Punjab!

AROUND THE WORLD 

It is an interesting twist of events. While the Punjabis that went to Canada crowded the classes 

for coaching in English language. But now the situation has gone full circle. Their kids are all 

proficient in their mother tongue i.e. English. They now jostle for the classes in Punjabi. This is a 

trend for the good. There are various centers that have come up for Punjabi grooming of these 

"Canadian" kids. Some of these centers are at Brampton's Cardinal Leger School; Alexander 

Lincoln High School in Mississuaga and Greater Toronto Area (GTA) where classes are held 

every week end. 

Punjabi learning not only is a household requirement rather the kids are awarded 

three credits for this achievement. In fact, in the high school, students are awarded three 

points per language learnt. And our kids are smart enough to make the most of this 

provision. It's infact smart killing of two birds with one stone! 

But students from primary classes differ. They don't get any point in their 

schools. They are there simply for one sole reason. It is the love for their parent's 

mother tongue-Punjabi!

out for Support of Turban in France 

Sikhs have been wrongly taken as muslims in the western world. This has 

been both advantageous along with surely being disadvantageous. How on earth 

this has been advantageous? The protests by Sikhs and others against the mis- 

interpretation of Sikhs for muslims have contributed for the assertion of the 

independent sikh identity in a much more effective way as compared to it would 

have been by the traditional ways and means. 

More so now when the French went ahead with their illogical stand of not 

allowing Sikhs with their turbans, (though, this is consequent upon their hate for the 

muslim community, which is just the other community that exhibits turban with its 

world wide presence like that of Sikhs), it is a welcome development that the World 

Council of Churches have decided to take up the matter with the French government. 

Similarly, the Church of Scientology, Switzerland has pressed upon the French 

government to withdraw its controversial and anti-minority decision so that religious 

minorities could enjoy their religious freedom. 

US University to give Guru Nanak Prize 

A US-based University-Hofstara University-has decided to give Guru Nanak 

Inter-Faith Prize to people or organizations that have contributed to promotion of 

constructive "dialogue between different faiths. The prize has been funded by S. Ishar Singh 

(Bindra) and shall be awarded bi-annually from the year 2008. 

UK Sikhs Organize Human Rights Meet 

The Sikh Federation (UK) organized an international human rights conference at 

Lagenthal, Switzerland on March 25 2007 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of 

Rome. The Conference stressed upon the religious freedom in Europe. Representatives from 15 countries and 

about 100 delegates from around the world participated in the conference. Sikh Human Rights rally was also 

organized on this occasion.

Voicing concern over 

French insensitivity 

The objective of any law has to be the 

welfare of people. It is not an empty exercise and is 

meant to fill a gap in law. No law can aim at bringing 

about only uniformity in law with a view to 

covering all communities if its basic purpose is not 

to sub serve the even tempo of society as a whole. 

In all public primary and secondary schools 

in France, the wearing of symbols or articles of 

clothing by which students ostentatiously display 

religious affiliation is forbidden. The only safeguard 

provided in law is that before any disciplinary 

action is taken against a student who allegedly 

violates the law, a dialogue with the student must 

precede. 

For a Sikh, wearing a Turban is not an 

optional but mandatory requirement of the Sikh 

faith. Such legislation will deny approximately 

7,000 Sikhs residing in France their fundamental 

right to practice the Sikh faith. 

Sikhs have contributed valiantly to the 

French aspirations of 'Liberty, Equality and 

Fraternity' during the First and Second World Wars. 

Turban wearing Sikh soldiers served in France in 13 

cavalry and 8 infantry regiments during World War 

1. The major battles during World War 1 in France in 

which Sikhs fought valiantly were: Ypres, La 

Bassée, Neuve Chapelle, Festubert, Loos, Givenchy 

and Somme. Their bravery and actions have been 

globally recognized. 

There is no evidence to suggest that the 

French core values of 'Liberty, Equality and 

Fraternity' have been threatened by anyone 

expressing his or her Faith, Religion or Ethnic 

Identity. France has emerged as a nation which 

champions the rights of people of all Faiths, 

Religions and Ethnic Identities. The strength of its 

secularity should not harm the very people it 

protects.

be jeopardized. We fear that the new law will be a 

throw-back to the dark days when there was a lack 

of understanding among people of different Faiths, 

Religions and Ethnic Identities before World War II. 

The Sikhs are the most significant minority 

affected by the ban. Infact, Sikhs were expected not 

to pose a threat to the ban but they have stunned the 

world with their voice as the loudest. Sikhs have 

reciprocated in the right manner and successfully 

made the world hear their voice. 

It seems that French Sikhs have 

unsurpassable love for their glorious Turbans. Their 

love is blended with the Sikh spirit and courage. The 

future lies in the hands of the French Sikh youth. 

France is the nation of French Sikhs. It is their 

motherland. They were born there and speak 

French. Leaving France and migrating to other 

European nations will be sheer cowardice. 

Why should Sikhs leave their motherland ? 

They are as much a part of the French population as 

President Chirac or Zidane, the football star. They 

laid down their lives for France and they love France 

the way they love Punjab!!

The Sikh community is disturbed over the 

fact that despite its contribution in the French 

economy, they have been equated with Muslim 

fundamentalists, and the French Government has 

declined to withdraw its controversial order. It is a 

direct attack on the Sikh community. The issue is 

not just of wearing or rejecting religious signs but 

also about preserving cultural diversity in the 

world. 

All Sikhs around the globe should unite and 

come forward in support of Sikhs in France. The 

Indian and Punjab Governments should send 

delegations to France. With a Sikh Prime Minister in 

USA Stands out in Support 

of Turban 

The distinctive form of the 

Khalsa with the turban makes Sikhs the 

most visible. You can spot a man with a 

turban among a crowd of thousands. 

The turban symbolizes discipline, 

integrity, humility, and spirituality. The 

turban is mandatory part of Sikh faith, 

not a social custom, or a hat that can be 

casually taken on and off. Sikh 

Americans are identified by their 

turbans. But many Americans citizen 

confuse Sikhs with the Arabs who also 

support Turbans (though in a very 

different style). This confusion among 

Americans made Sikhs target of hate 

crime which was actually targeted 

against Arab Jehadis. The rising cases 


the centre and a Sikh Chief Minister in Punjab, the 

Sikhs expect them to pressurize the French 

Government to reverse the ban and allow Sikhs to 

practice their faith freely in France. The SGPC and 

DSGMC should set up a Khalsa School and a Khalsa 

College in France. It should also ensure that the 

Sikhs in Punjab and elsewhere maintain their Sikh 

outlook. Sikh Organizations should educate 

Sikhs about this ban and also prepare to face 

bans on freedom to practice the Sikh faith in 

other nations. All Sikhs should unite under the 

Nishaan Sahib to face situations like these with high 

spirits.

THE CASE FOUGHT & WON IN THE 

HON'BLE COURT OF UK 

Where S. Trilochan Singh pleaded .... 

“My Lord, the question here is not of the 

turban and the crash-helmet,as the prosecution 

sees it. The question here is of law, which has 

caused grave injury to the sanctity of the turban of 

the Sikhs. A Hindu would not,under any 

circumstances, accept a law which compels him to 

take beef, nor a Muslim ever obey a law 

compelling him to take pork even if the 

government proves that it is done for their 

physical well-being. This law of crash-helmet has 

been passed from the point of view of Christian 

religion and European society. For the British, the 

turban and the helmet are identical and 

interchangeable, but for a Sikh to wear a cap, a hat 

or a crash-helmet is an act of apostasy. A Sikh who 

does so is an apostate as per Sikhism. “My Lord, to 

clarify this statement I must first explain what 

sanctity of the Sikh turban means, and why it is a 

sin for a Sikh, more deadly than death, to wear a 

cap or a hat or a crash-helmet. 

“The turban, no doubt, is worn by Chin tribes 

in Burma, who are Christians, and by Arabs in the 

Middle-East, because Prophet Mohammed wore 

it. Among some Arabs, it is a symbol of royalty. It is 

also worn by Rajput princes as a symbol of royalty 

in India. But in Sikh religion and society, it is 

inseparably connected with baptism and 

ordination. 

“In Sikhism, there is no distinction between a 

layman or a priest (man or woman). A Sikh who 

accepts baptism and has basic knowledge of 

scriptures, can perform any function of a priest, 

including marriage ceremony. A priest can become 

a manager of a factory and still carry on 

missionary work. There is no distinction between 

a lay Sikh and a missionary Sikh. The garb and the 

basic symbols of holiness are to be worn by every 

devout and true Sikh. He who does not wear the 

turban and keep uncut or untrimmed hair and 

beard with a turban, may be a novice or admirer of 

Sikhism, but he is not a Sikh in any sense of the

word. 

“The same symbol may have a secular 

meaning for one person, but it may have a great 

spiritual significance for another section of 

humanity. Among the Jews and the Romans, death 

on the Cross was a sign of humiliation, shame and 

ignominy. (Cor. 18:23, Heb 12:2). Yet, for the 

Christians it became through Christ the supreme 

manifestation of God's love for man. It is said to be 

a symbol of new life, a new outlook and complete 

union with Christ. To take up the Cross means to 

turn away from the service of the world, for the 

service of God. So is the turban of the Sikhs. It is a 

symbol of new life, a new outlook and a spiritual 

rebirth. 

“The first question asked to a novice when he 

seeks Sikh baptism is, whether he accepts death in 

order to be a reborn in this spiritual rebirth of 

baptism. If he says no, baptism is refused to him. 

“If you want to play the game of Love”, says Guru 

Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, “then come to my 

path with your head on the palm of your hand.” 

“Before a Sikh takes the vow of wearing a 

turban and keeping hair and beard, he takes a vow 

of accepting death rather than renouncing, under 

any circumstances, the symbol of his divine 

personality and faith. Just as a Christian would 

not wear a Hindu idol or a talisman around his 

neck in place of the Cross, so a Sikh would not 

wear a Hindu Cap, a Christian Cowl or a British 

hat or helmet under any circumstances. 

“What surprises freedom loving enlightened 

persons is not the refusal of the Sikhs to wear 

crash-helmet, while riding a motorbike, but the 

imposition of law compelling the Sikhs to wear 

helmets while riding a motorbike, when the 

British government knew full well that the Sikhs 

rejected the steel-helmets in the battlefield during 

the wars. It is a pity that the British government 

has now passed a law, which compels them to 

wear helmets, and thus compelling them either to

commit an act of apostasy or to five up riding a 

motor-bike. Punishment for disobeying military 

command during the war was death, but the Sikhs 

did not care for it. They refused and revolted 

against the order. They refused to fight if they 

were compelled to do so. The military command 

and the law of the steel-helmet was at once 

changed, giving exemption to the Sikhs. The 

sanctity of the turban and their solemn vow that 

they would, under no circumstances, wear 

helmets meant more to them. The Divine law 

clashed with the secular law, and the Sikhs stood 

firmly by the Divine Law. 

“We have very old documents of the Sikh 

Code of Conduct in the British Museum, 

particularly No. 14152 bb 2. It is entitled 

Rehitnama Prahlad Rai and Bhai Nand Lal. The 

first and foremost injunctions are : Cursed is a 

Sikh (i) who visits prostitutes, (ii) gambles, (iii) 

who smokes, (iv) who goes out in the society 

without a turban or wears a cap instead of turban, 

(v) who cuts or trims his beard and hair, (vi) who 

eats meat, cut according to Muslim rites. Those 

who contravene or transgress any of these 

commandments are treated as apostate Sikhs. Any 

backsliding is an act of heresy. They must seek 

baptism again if they wish to become morally and 

spiritually accepted Sikhs. 

“My Lord, it was Edmund Burke, who said 

that there are two and only two foundations of 

law : utility and equity or justice. The law 

compelling everyone to wear crash-helmets was 

made with an eye on utility. I have seen with my 

own eyes a number of people, wearing crashhelmets, 

dying in motor accidents. Other parts of 

the body are as vulnerable and sensitive to injury 

as the head. But as far as the Sikhs are concerned, 

the second foundation of law, that of equity and 

justice, has been completely ignored. 

“Human laws, no doubt, are made out of the 

instinct of self preservation and are subject to 

change where they infringe anyone's personal, 

religious and cultural freedom. The Divine Laws 

or religious laws grow out of the spiritual will of 

man to conquer fear and death, to overcome 

suffering and transience, and live in inner peace 

and glory of eternity. The turban is worn by the 


Sikhs under a divine command of the Founders of 

Sikhism, aiming to give them inspiration for 

achieving such a state of mind and spirit. 

“No Indian or British law can compel or 

coerce the Sikhs to change this Divine Law of our 

prophets, or modify it under any circumstances. 

The turban is a part of this moral and spiritual 

discipline and way of life, whose sole purpose is to 

conquer fear and death. Nothing else, least of all a 

crashhelmet, nay not even a steel shirt, a steel pant 

and a steel coat can give that sense of moral and 

spiritual power and security, which the turban 

and the Sikh Code of Conduct, associated with the 

turban, gives it. A Sikh who wears a helmet in any 

form, abjures his faith morally and spiritually, 

though he may continue to call himself a Sikh by 

reason of his birth in a Sikh family. This law 

compelling the Sikhs to wear crash-helmets is 

unreasonable, infringement of the religious 

freedom of the Sikhs in U.K., the majority of whom 

are now the citizens of this country, which 

believes and even loudly preaches democratic 

freedom and equality for all minorities. 

“Laws, said Plutarch, are like spider's web. 

They hold the weak who are caught in their 

meshes, but the rich and the powerful escape it.” 

This law compelling everyone driving a motorbike 

to wear crash-helmet is ornamental to all 

Christians, but to the Sikhs it has proved to be a 

spider's web. As weak and helpless victims of this 

spider's web, the Sikh religious minority in this 

country has come to this court for justice. Injustice 

in this case has arisen out of a too literal and 

absolutely secular constructions of the law. 

The Sikhs have only two alternatives in the 

face of such a law. They should either abjure their 

faith in order to obey it, or they must break this 

law till it is suitably changed or declared bad in 

law by the courts. No self-respecting people can 

accept the first alternative. It would amount to 

signing the death warrant of their own faith and 

culture. 

“My Lord, the Sikhs who are accused of 

driving the motorbike without wearing the 

helmet, are not breaking the law wilfully. They are 

on the other hand merely seeking justice and 

resisting any conscious or unconscious attempt on

the part of the British government to cause injury 

to the sanctity of their turban and all that is 

associated with it. Justice, my Lord, is truth in 

action so for truth in has been the crowning glory 

of the courts of this country, and the judgements 

of British courts, upholding the religious and 

cultural freedoms of the individuals and the 

minorities, have been frequently cited in Indian 

and Asian courts. I hope, your Lordship will study 

the case and the law from the moral and religious 

point of view, and give the Sikhs freedom to 

preserve the sanctity of the turban, which is a 

symbol of their religious discipline and way of 

life.”

A short foreign tour has become an integral 

part of the training provided to senior student 

officers of the National Defence College. The 

participants study security problems with all their 

social, political, economic and international 

ramifications. The schedule naturally includes 

meetings with those responsible for the formulation 

of the country's policies. Yet, the unexpected always 

happens, like the tour I led, as head of the college, to a 

country where the president ran all affairs of the 

State. 

Although we were all in uniform, we went 

through two security checks. Just before we were to 

be ushered into the president's office, a dour-looking 

security chief took me aside and told me that one of 

our party would not be allowed in. I was taken 

aback: who and why? He pointed to a smartlydressed 

air commodore. "Unless he removes his 

headgear, he will not be allowed to go in," he said. I 

explained that a turban was part of a Sikh's outfit, 

and the officer was wearing the regulation coloured

At that moment, the big doors of the president's 

office opened and a number of ADCs came forward to 

escort us. I held my ground. "Either every member of 

our group goes in or we don't go in at all." The ADCs 

milled around us as we stood our ground, both 

parties extremely polite and both unbending. For the 

next few minutes, there was much coming and going 

of ADCs. Consultations took place in hushed tones. 

We stood there looking as amiable as possible, and 

feeling anything but. 

Then, to our pleasant surprise, the 

president came out of his office, greeted us 

warmly and took all of us inside. Later, the first 

lady, known for her collection of shoes, joined in and 

we had an interesting discussion on the country's 

social problems. Later that evening, the air 

commodore received a magnum-size bottle of 

champagne with a note of apology from the security 

chief. But 'no explanation. We never did find out how 

the turban became a security risk or how its 

mysterious threat was neutralised. 

I have often wondered what the security 

chief would have said If he'd learnt that the same 

air commodore later became India's air chief !

The confirmation by Jamaican police that indeed 

Pakistani coach Bob Woolmer was murdered sent shock 

waves across the sport of cricket plunging the game and 

its lovers into deep despair. The glaze of the showpiece 

event, the ICC World Cup, was taken off with this tragic 

end of one of the crickets most loved coaches. The 

nexus of the underworld and match-fixers is quite 

disturbing for the sake of games future and credibility 

in general. The match fixing saga had already dented 

the gentlemen games glory and further adding insult to 

injury, this murder will create a hole in the games 

integrity which would be hard to fill. Inquest into 

Woolmer's murder should not be delayed & hopefully 

the man gets justice & burial, long overdue quickly. 

Analyzing Team India's situation after the 

humiliating exit from the World Cup, one feels it is 

similar to that of England's Football Team. For both 

every World Cup brings with it hope, expectation and 

eventually despair. The lack of killer instinct, 

complacency and they being under achievers on the 

biggest stage of them all alongside the notion that 

member that make up the team are bigger than the 

team itself is quite disturbing. One thing is confirmed 

that the Team India are a great batting line-up on paper, 

full of great individual players, with fat records. 

Unfortunately, when it comes to combining as a team & 

playing in a pressure situation, they are found wanting. 

The bowling on its part did the job they were asked to 

but uninspiring & lack of self belief among the batsman 

was very disturbing. Once again, Sachin fell short on 

the big stage when performance was crucial to succeed. 

As in English football, the cricket in India has incessant 

media hype where players are proclaimed gods after 

half a decent performance. People and media love to 

live on past glory-1983 to India and 1966 for England. 

Both went to the World Cups with teams that they said 

were best placed to go all the way, while England 

limped to the last eight in Germany, Indians could last 

only three matches at the World Cup in Caribbean. To 

top up both had rather high-profile coaches to boost off. 

This comparison is only to analyze the less substance 

and high hype which has dogged both the teams in 

different sports. It is now for the BCCI, Board of Cricket 

Control in India, to resurrect its house in order to come 

up with policies which can give some reasonable hope 

to the fans. The board cannot absolve themselves of this 

loss by putting the whole blame on the players. 

After nearly a week of intense speculation and 

rumor after wilder rumor, charges, counter-chargers 

and general madness, D-Day, stock taking meet at 


Mumbai, turned out to be somewhat of a damp squib. 

Sure, if sponsorship deals, advertising and other such 

things are affecting the players performance, a rational 

solution must be found. The meeting to take stock of 

India's shock defeat brought out some very important 

decisions. The decision to ask Ravi Shastri to manage 

the team for Bangladesh tour is a good sign, but this 

should be a long term step and not a short term one. 

Appointing of paid selectors, abolishing zonal system of 

selection and appointing a backup team of bowling and 

fielding coach along side Ravi being given the role of 

manager are right steps towards over hauling the 

rotting cricket structure in India. 

Talking about the exploits on the field, the jinx on 

the host of World Cup Cricket continued when Lara's 

and West Indian dreams were shattered as they lost and 

went out of the race to claim the title. The semifinal 

stage is all set with Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka 

and South Africa reaching the last four. Lasith Malinga 

getting four wickets in four consecutive balls was 

highlight in the second stage along side the tigers of 

Bangladesh beating the strong South African and later 

capitulating them selves against the Irish for a surprise 

loss. The form of Sri Lanka and New Zealand is good as 

they prepare for the semis by taking on the might of 

Australia who on their part are playing superbly and 

their stranglehold on the World Cup for the 

unprecedented hat-trick seems to get stronger by the 

match. Similarly South Africa peaking at the right 

moment poses serious threat to Australian dream. 

At last, turning towards Punjab and its heroes one 

remembered the hero of 1954 Asian Games 

Sd.Parduman Singh with heart-felt sorrow on his 

demise owing to prolonged illness. He will not only be 

remembered for winning the most medals by any male 

athlete for India in the Asian Games, but also the grit & 

determination he displayed in achieving that glory. 

During his career, he won three gold, one silver and 

bronze at the three Asian Games (1954-64) that he 

participated in, making Shot-put and Discuss throw his 

own events. "He's the best-ever Indian athlete I've come 

across in life. The six feet tall man commanded respect 

from everybody and the entire athletic community 

fondly called him Dada, the elder brother", said his coathlete 

Milkha Singh, the living legend of Indian Sports, 

putting Parduman Singh's stature and achievement in 

correct perspective. It is now up to the present day 

athletes to emulate the greatness of the man and keep 

his memory alive with distinguished performances. 

Certainly Ronjan Singh Sodhi winning a bronze at 

World Cup of shooting in double trap event is a good 

sign. Also the future seems bright with Sukhvir Singh, 

who won the inaugural 'Cricket Star', a nation wide 

cricket talent hunt show and is all set to play for 

Leicestershire, the way Sachin once did in the English 

County Cricket. One hopes this young lad becomes a 

torch bearer for the youth of Punjab by bringing glory to 

the state and country alike.
