In these times of globalisation, when boundaries are blurry, holding the ESSOP Annual Meeting
simultaneously with the XVI National Conference on Social Paediatrics carries the symbolic
meaning of the international and cross-cultural vision of child issues, which are increasingly
becoming commonplace in Western society. Such a global perspective will be further enhanced at
this Conference with the contribution of representatives from Latin American, a region with a long
standing tradition in children’s integral health care and to which we are tied by close cultural bonds.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child of the United Nations (1989) is the major milestone
attained in the field of legal protection of the child. The 2003 Meeting on Social Paediatrics is
geared to promote, among the health professionals, the knowledge and evaluation of such
Convention, which is mandatory for all ratifying countries. In addition, this Meeting also aims at
reinforcing the significance of The Rights of the Child in their health care.
In today’s health care practice, we encounter new circumstances that have a direct impact on
children’s health, such as the health care of children from other countries (both those who
immigrate with their families and pre-teenagers and teenagers travelling on their own, the so-called
“unaccompanied foreign minors”- or children coming from international adoption programs), as well
as those moving to other countries carrying certain prevailing illnesses, mainly infectious ones
(“travelling children”).
On the other hand, the development of children and family life today is also characterized by new
circumstances, which trigger off health problems leading to medical consultations. In this respect,
we could include the following subjects: the impact of the mass media and the Internet, the
influence of social customs and the use of leisure time, among others.
The approach of child abuse care and prevention from the health sector should consider aspects
such as the identification of child abuse situations in “seemingly healthy children”, awareness of
the importance of child pornography and commercial sexual exploitation. At the same time, we
should advance in the study of the clinical problems related to them
Objetivos:
La celebración de la Reunión Anual de la ESSOP y del XVI Congreso Nacional de Pediatría Social
tiene los siguientes objetivos:
• Analizar desde el contexto europeo, latinoamericano y español aspectos relativos a la salud de
la infancia, que tienen repercusiones en la práctica asistencial, la prevención de enfermedades
y la promoción de la salud.
• Contribuir al conocimiento de la Convención de los Derechos del Niño de Naciones Unidas y
su aplicación en la práctica sanitaria y, mediante ello, a la mejora de la atención pediátrica.
• Mejorar la atención a los niños procedentes de otros países considerando sus necesidades
bio-psico-sociales.
• Avanzar en el abordaje clínico y las secuelas del maltrato y en sus aspectos sociales y legales.
Objectives.
Debatir sobre los nuevos determinantes sociales que repercuten en la salud de la infancia
y la familia.
The objectives of ESSOP Annual Meeting and of the XVI National Conference on Social
Paediatrics are as follows:
• To analyse the aspects related to children’s health within the European, Latin American and
Spanish context, focusing on those having a direct impact on medical practice, disease
prevention and health promotion.
• To contribute to the knowledge of the Convention on the Rights of the Child of the United
Nations and its application in daily practice in order to improve paediatric care.
• To improve the health care of children coming from other countries taking into account their
bio-psycho-social needs.
• To advance in the clinical approach and outcomes of child abuse and its social and legal
aspects.
• To discuss the new social determinants that have an impact on child and family health.
