64 R E P O R T A J E / C O V E R A G E La construcción del palacio se realiza con materiales antisísmicos, tras la experiencia vivida en el terremoto de 1906 en donde las rígidas obras de ladrillo sufrieron los embates de la naturaleza. Los mil 620 metros cuadrados se edificaron a base de una tabiquería de madera de roble apernada, reforzada por vigas de fierro. El elegante e imponente Palacio Rioja es el claro reflejo de la recordada "Belle Époque" que en 1910 vivió la sociedad de Viña del Mar. De sus habitaciones, destaca el gran salón, el comedor, la biblioteca y los salones imperio, Los Boulles, Rosado y Celeste. Sus muebles los componen piezas importadas principalmente de España y Francia. En sus jardines podremos podremos admirar especies arbóreas originales de Japón, Brasil, Australia, China e Islas Norfolk. Originalmente, el terreno en donde está emplazado el palacio, denominado como Quinta San Franciso, constituyó la primera residencia de la reconocida familia Vergara, quienes luego de venderla se trasladan en forma definitiva hasta la Quinta Vergara. Cabe destacar, que anteriormente al palacio y sus jardines se anexaban cuatro manzanas unidas, rodeadas por un parque palmario y entre sus dependencias podíamos encontrar canchas de tenis, piscinas, teatro al aire libre y caballerizas. Hoy su extensión está reducida sólo al palacio y jardín, sin embargo, conserva su distinguida estructura y singular historia. En julio de 1956, el palacio es adquirido por la Municipalidad de Viña del Mar, desde entonces sus instalaciones son ocupadas para diversos actos culturales . Para el año 1971 funciona como sede de la alcaldía y finalmente en 1979 el Palacio Rioja fue destinado como Museo de Arte Decorativo con una colección de fines del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX. El 14 de mayo de 1985 fue declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional por el Ministerio de Educación. Originally, the land where the palace is currently located, known as 'Quinta San Francisco', was the first residence of the well-known family 'Vergara' who after selling it moved to the 'Quinta Vergara'. Also, prior to the existence of the palace and its gardens, four blocks were attached to the land, surrounded by a palm tree park and swimming pools, tennis courts, outdoor theater and horse stables. Today its extension is reduced only to the palace and garden, however it still retains its unique structure and distinguished story. In July of 1956, the palace was acquired by the Council of Viña del Mar and since then its facilities are occupied for different cultural events. In the year 1971 it serves as the headquarters of the Council and finally in the year 1979 the “Palacio Rioja” it is occupied as a “Museum of Decorative Arts” with a collection of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
