Collahuasi y agricultores en el norte chileno
Trabajando
juntos por el agua
Collahuasi and farmers in
northern Chile:
Working together
for water
The mining company and
the inhabitants of the Pica
oasis developed a project
together to improve
canals which increased the
availably of water for local
farmers.
In the district of Pica, in the far–north
of Chile, the mining company Doña
Inés de Collahuasi coexists with local
farmers. These neighbors have taken a
qualitative leap in their relation thanks to
a project focused on water, an element
of vital importance for both parties.
Pica is an oasis in the interior of
the Region of Tarapaca. The local
population largely lives from farming,
producing lemons, mangos, guavas
and oranges thanks to the existence
of irrigation of canals some of which
are seventy years old. However, farming
has much longer history in the
area. Prior to the canals there were
ditches which were designed in the
eighteenth century by Spanish conquistadores.
This system was later
replaced by storage ponds or lakes.
These canals lose on average
50% of the water stored in them, rising
to 100% in some critical points.
As a result, the fields are irrigated
every 18, 22 and 28 days with distri-
Limones, mangos, guayabas y naranjas
están entre los productos más destacados,
con una actividad que se ha
sustentado gracias a la existencia de
canales de regadío, que tienen una antigüedad
de 70 años. Sin embargo, la
