PROYECTO DE MEJORAMIENTO
DE LOS CANALES
El proyecto de recuperación de caudales
se trazó como objetivo mejorar, rehabilitar
y reconstruir 6.102 metros lineales
de un total de 9.449 para disminuir la pérdida
de agua, obras que se realizaron con
aportes de Collahuasi, los agricultores y la
Comisión Nacional de Riego.
Entre mayo y junio de 2011 se realizó
el levantamiento topográfico de todos los
canales extraprediales de Pica y Matilla, a
lo que siguió la construcción, que empezó
en diciembre de ese año y se extendió
hasta 2013.
Como explica Luciano Malhue, gerente
de Relaciones con la Comunidad
de Collahuasi, “el proyecto de canales
es un punto más de avance que permite
abordar desde otro punto de vista el
planteamiento histórico de los agricultores
respecto a la disponibilidad del agua del
oasis para su uso agrícola. Este trabajo
permitió contar con datos cuantitativos
que logran despejar gran parte de la inquietud
que han planteado los agricultores
en los últimos años”.
Más allá del mejoramiento
de los ingresos para
la comunidad, al obtener
los agricultores una mayor
producción y fruta de
mejor calibre, el proyecto
permitió cambiar el paradigma
de que Collahuasi
estaba afectando con su
operación la disponibilidad
de agua.
La reconstrucción de los canales de riego de Pica es considerada como la mayor inversión en los
últimos 30 años en obras de riego y la más grande en los últimos 40 años en el norte de Chile.
The rebuilding of the irrigation canals in Pica is considered the largest investment in irrigation works
in the last thirty years and the largest in northern Chile in the last forty years.
the canals and branch canals which
exist in Pica and Matilla as the existing
data was incomplete. Work then began
on a project which was presented
to the National Irrigation Commission
to apply for a subsidy under Chile’s
Irrigation and Drainage Law.
IIMPROVING THE CANALS
The project aimed to increase the
flow of water by improving, rehabilitating
and rebuilding 6,102 lineal
meters of a total of 9,449 meters of
canals. The work was carried out
with contributions from Collahuasi,
farmers and the National Irrigation
Commission.
Between May and June 2011, a topographical
survey was carried out
of all the off–farm canals in Pica and
Mantilla. The construction work took
place between December 2011 and
2013.
“The canal project is another step
towards being able to tackle the farmers’
historic position on the availability
of water in the oasis for farming.
This work provided quantitative data
which clarified many of the concerns
the farmers have expressed in recent
years,” says Luciano Malhue,
Collahuasi’s community relations
manager.
The project managed to recover
100% of the water in the intervened
canals, improving the frequency of
irrigation from once to twice a month.
“Today we can talk about the operational
impact of the implementation
of the project, as this has to do what
the farmers can do with the increase
in the availability of water for use in
farming. More frequent irrigation can
increase the volume and quality of
fruit produced,” says Malhue.
