INTRINSICALLY EVIL ACTS<br />

The term “intrinsically evil acts” has served, within the Catholic<br />

tradition of moral theology, as a defense against subjectivism. This article<br />

investigates the meaning of the term within that tradition and proposes<br />

a way in which its content might be re-thought. The phrase<br />

occurs in a number of documents which present official Church teaching.<br />

An historical investigation suggests that there are at least two theories<br />

of morality which are reflected in the doctrine of intrinsically evil<br />

acts: one has its roots in the theology of St. Thomas, the other has its<br />

origins in the modern era. A new way of dealing with the issue is suggested<br />

in terms of the philosophy and theology of gift.<br />

La expresión “actos intrínsecamente malos” sirvió en la tradición<br />

católica de la teología moral como una defensa contra el subjetivismo.<br />

Este artículo pretende investigar el sentido de la expresión dentro de la<br />

tradición y proponer una forma de reinterpretar su contenido. La expresión<br />

aparece en un sinnúmero de documentos de la enseñanza oficial<br />

de la Iglesia. Una investigación de tipo histórico sugiere que hay, por lo<br />

menos, dos teorías de moralidad que se reflejan en la doctrina acerca<br />

del “acto intrínsecamente malo”: una que echa raíces en la teología del<br />

Doctor Angélico y otra que tiene origen en la época moderna. La filosofía<br />

y la teología del ‘don’ insinúan una nueva forma de entender dicha<br />

expresión.<br />

Il termine “atti intrinsicamente cattivi” è stato usato, nella tradizione<br />

teologica cattolica, come una difesa contro il soggettivismo.<br />

L’articolo indaga sul significato del termine in questa tradizione e propone<br />

un modo con cui il suo contenuto potrebbe essere ripensato. La<br />

frase si trova in un certo numero di documenti che presentano l’insegnamento<br />
