Appendix IX: Summary of the Adriatic Sea experience in small pelagicfishery management (E. Arneri, AdriaMed and MedSudMed projectsCoordinator)The description of fisheries resources’ stock boundaries and the identification of sharedstocks are of primary importance especially in closed or semi enclosed basins. This isparticularly relevant in the Adriatic Sea where coastal states are likely to exploit sharedresources and management of their fisheries assumes international relevance. The jointdata analysis for assessing and monitoring the state of shared fisheries resources insupport of harmonized management strategies is one of the main issues to be addressedin the Adriatic Sea. In this framework the AdriaMed Project has had and still has astrategic importance by providing the appropriate framework and technical support toplan and perform joint studies and cooperative analysis. Since its inception, theAdriaMed Project provided support to the identification and monitoring of small pelagicshared stock. In the framework of AdriaMed joint data collection and analysis involvingthe experts from all the participating countries was initiated. Considerable work hasbeen promoted by AdriaMed to jointly monitor and assess small pelagic resources in theAdriatic Sea. A network of experts that meet yearly during the Working Group on SmallPelagics Fisheries Resources (WG) was established in 2000 thus creating the baselinefor national data sharing and joint analysis. As follow up, the stock assessment of themain small pelagic species (i.e. Sardina pilchardus and Engraulis enchrasicolus) wasinitiated involving data and experts of the countries exploiting the species. This stockassessment is presented and discussed annually at the Working Group on Small Pelagicfisheries resources of the SAC-GFCM.An outline is given of the main activities, data available, methodologies employed andresults achieved by the AdriaMed Working Group on small pelagic fisheries resources.Particular attention is provided to highlight difficulties and drawbacks on the practicaland on the methodological side which could hinder the success and the reliability of theproduction of a scientific management advice on these fisheries.23
