Project methodologies will be presented to supportand encourage the sustainable development of tourismand urban infrastructure of the region, particularly in themunicipalities of Santarem and Belterra.During the activities of the school, techniques andknowledge from the area of design will be introducedthrough workshops presented by designers, with theparticipation of students of design and people from communitiesin the region. Thus it is intended to promote theinterchange of traditional knowledge in fusion with scienceand technology recycling and training local man power. The projects to be developed at the Design Laboratoryof the Forest will focus on themes such as: the creation ofcommunication materials to divulge touristic infrastructure;a signaling project focused on environmental education;the creation of projects utilizing recycled materials; thecreation of utensils for garbage collection; the design ofurban furniture; development of hand-crafted productswith materials from the forest; projects for the creation ofbrands and packaging for products derived from forestextraction. Keywords:public design, participatory design, Amazon, tourism, sustainabilty, ecodesign, forests.1 Designer. Master of Arts in in Design at Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, USP. Doctoralin Design at the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo ,USP research in “The Design ofLatex Products in the Amazon: new pathways”. Professor in the course of Design at FACAMPFaculdades de Campinas.IntroductionAt this point a new paradigm is taking shape in the fieldof design: the value of a project is no longer consideredonly by the signature it carries or by its cosmetic resultbut its ability to translate reality, by its response to theyearnings to redesign the world. Moreover, the need to preserve the Amazon rainforest, also leads us to think about what actions could comefrom the field of design to contribute to the maintenanceof standing forests and promote the alternative use ofnatural resources.According to studies prepared by the Brazilian Academyof Sciences (2008), possible new perspectives for sustainabledevelopment in the Amazon will emerge fromthe union between science, technology, innovation andlocal culture.“For the potential which it has come to represent for theworld to promote an alternative use of natural resourcesand to maintain sustainability of the planet the Amazonhas acquired a symbolic value for the future of humanity.”(Becker, 2008, p. 8)“Science, technology & Innovation is an extremely comprehensiveprocess. It involves information, research, reflections, andknowledge, discoveries and their application in the process ofproduction and generation of new products in all fields of life andhuman activity.” (Becker, 2008, p.11)On the other hand, according to Manzini it is necessaryto increase opportunities and ideas that will “operate aslocal attractions able to stimulate and direct actions inboth the demand and supply side of services” (Manzini,2008, p. 27). In this process of transition towards sustainabilitydesign can be seen as:“The ability to generate visions of a sustainable socio-technicalsystem; organize them into a coherent system of regenerativeproducts and services recognized and evaluated by a sufficientlyample public capable of applying them effectively” (Manzini,2008, p.28).This article presents a reflection on possible areas andteaching methodologies in the Field of design directedtowards the sustainable development of the Amazon. The actions and ideas presented here are aimed attraining, awareness and appreciation of the cultural andenvironmental heritage of the region.43
