Upon entering in contactwith the culture of the Amazon peoples who still live inan integrated fashion with their environment, it becomesevi<strong>de</strong>nt that the possibility of sharing information an<strong>de</strong>xperiences through projects <strong>de</strong>stined to the local realitycan be as enriching for future <strong>de</strong>signers as for the forestpeoples.During weekends it is visited by tourists who leave trash allover the place.Absence of local signaling. There exist no signs on the roadsindicating directions to the communities of the municipalitiesof Santarém and Belterra.beneficiaries of raw materials from the rain Forest resultingin projects which can engage the local culture and explorethe potentialities of the region. The methodology will haveenvironmental education as its main gui<strong>de</strong>line includingthe recycling of discar<strong>de</strong>d materials and products by localpeople and tourists. It also seeks professional trainingand the creation of opportunities for the inclusion of localhuman resources in the labor market.The projects will be allocated to the local communities andthe initial actions will be focused on the following topics:1. The creation of communication materials to promotethe local tourism infrastructure;2. Signaling projects focused on environmentaleducation;3. The creation of projects which utilize the recycling ofdiscar<strong>de</strong>d materials;4. The creation of utensils for garbage collection withlocal techniques and resources;5. Projects for urban furniture;6. The <strong>de</strong>velopment of hand-crafted products ma<strong>de</strong>from materials from the forest;7. Projects for brands and packaging of products <strong>de</strong>rivedfrom forest extraction.The propositionThe Design Laboratory of the Forest is a differentiatedproposal of research to carry out projects related to public<strong>de</strong>sign and the training of local people. It was created by<strong>de</strong>signer Fernanda Sarmento and journalist specializing ineco-tourism Thais Helena Me<strong>de</strong>iros who has worked for 15years with communities in the Amazon. It will be based atthe town Alter do Chão, Pará and with the goal of <strong>de</strong>velopingactions that will support and encourage sustainable<strong>de</strong>velopment of urban infrastructure and tourism in thearea, particularly in the municipalities of Santarem andBelterra.It aims to introduce techniques and knowledge from thearea of <strong>de</strong>sign through lectures and practical workshopsby <strong>de</strong>signers with the participation of stu<strong>de</strong>nts of <strong>de</strong>signand representatives of the regional population. Existing techniquesin the Amazon will be studied as well as possibleBelow the resi<strong>de</strong>nts of Jamaraquá community working withlatex in the second workshop in 2009.The regionThe rural communities in the west of Pará, located on thebanks of the Tapajós and Arapiuns River are traditionalriver dwellers mainly of indigenous origins and producefor their subsistence practicing shifting cultivation an<strong>de</strong>xtraction. Despite their proximity to urban centers theyhave practically no income. At the present time theseriver dwellers face the rapid <strong>de</strong>pletion of their naturalresources caused by commercial fishing, illegal logging,large fires (queimadas), the pressures of populationgrowth and agricultural expansion putting at risk theguarantee of their own subsistence.45
