magnitu<strong>de</strong>s differ. In Table 5 un<strong>de</strong>r the source co<strong>de</strong>s GS and MOS, references<br />

are listed which <strong>de</strong>scribe how these magnitu<strong>de</strong>s were computed. Some magnitu<strong>de</strong>s<br />

were <strong>de</strong>rived by local institutions during this project and a <strong>de</strong>scription <strong>of</strong><br />

these computations follows here.<br />

Argentina: Both m 1 and M. magnitu<strong>de</strong>s are inclu<strong>de</strong>d. A <strong>de</strong>scription <strong>of</strong><br />

these magnitu<strong>de</strong>s is given in Cartaena and Castano (1973).<br />

Bolivia: .lagnitu<strong>de</strong>s (mb) reported with the source co<strong>de</strong> SCB were <strong>de</strong>rived<br />

from M 1 magnitu<strong>de</strong>s as follows:<br />

mb = 0.65 + 0.89 ML (.)<br />

The ML magnitu<strong>de</strong>s in this relationship were <strong>de</strong>termined using the following<br />

relationship:<br />

ML = log(A/T) + 1.8 log (A) + 3.5 (2)<br />

where A is the maximum amplitu<strong>de</strong> in microns <strong>of</strong> the S-phase from the short­<br />

period seismogram and T the predominant period for the same train <strong>of</strong> waves; A<br />

represents the epicentral di:utance in <strong>de</strong>grees and 3.5 is the scale correction<br />

in or<strong>de</strong>r to match the Richter <strong>de</strong>finition. Other magnitu<strong>de</strong>s are also listed<br />

with the scale co<strong>de</strong>s &, F, and M. Magnitu<strong>de</strong>s with the co<strong>de</strong> G are ML<br />

magnitu<strong>de</strong>s whiuh w,'re calculated using equation 2 above. Magnitu<strong>de</strong>s with the<br />

co<strong>de</strong> P are mb magnitu<strong>de</strong>s converted from M s magnitu<strong>de</strong>s reported by Pasa<strong>de</strong>na<br />

using the following equation:<br />

mb = 2.37 + 0.56 M s<br />

Magnitu<strong>de</strong>s with the scale co<strong>de</strong> M are ML magnitu<strong>de</strong>s converted from maximum<br />

intensity (Io) on the MM scale using the following equation:<br />
