COMMENTS ON DESTRUCTIVE EARTHQUAKES WHICH HAVE OCCURRED IN ARGENTINE<br />

1. Earthquake <strong>of</strong> EstLco (Salta), 13 September 1662.<br />

It completely <strong>de</strong>stroyed the city <strong>of</strong> Talavera <strong>of</strong> Madrid or Esteco, next<br />

to the Camino Real, in the southeast region <strong>of</strong> the province <strong>of</strong> Salta. In<br />

1634, Esteco already had 2000 inhabitants but this earthquake was so <strong>de</strong>structive<br />

that the city was not rebuilt.<br />

It caued consi <strong>de</strong>rable damage in the city <strong>of</strong> Salta, some IOu km from the<br />

epicenter.<br />

According to the reports <strong>of</strong> the Lime there was at least one aftershock,<br />

<strong>of</strong> great intensity, which produced further damage.<br />

2. Earthqualke <strong>of</strong> Mendoza, 20 March 1861.<br />

It is consi<strong>de</strong>red the eart hquake which percentage-wise caused the most<br />

damage and the greatest number <strong>of</strong> victims throughout all <strong>of</strong> the Argentine<br />

seismic historv. According to the census <strong>of</strong> 1857, the city <strong>of</strong> Mendoza had<br />

8,000 inhabitants, <strong>of</strong> which 5,000 were victims <strong>of</strong> this earthquake. It <strong>de</strong>stroyed<br />

all <strong>of</strong> the yity, inctud ing the chu rches which were <strong>of</strong> brick and lime.<br />

Great aundslii<strong>de</strong>s were observed in the mountains nearby the city. Many<br />

cracks were observed in the ground. Liquefaction effects were only verified<br />

in uaymalhen.<br />

Manv aftershocks were noted, some <strong>of</strong> great intensity, specially during<br />

the first three days after the main earthquake.<br />

3. Arg:entine Earthquake, 27 October 1894.<br />

It produced important damage in the provinces <strong>of</strong> San Juan and La Rioja<br />

and, to a lesser <strong>de</strong>gree, in the province <strong>of</strong> Mendoza. It caused cracks in<br />

some <strong>of</strong> the buildings in the city <strong>of</strong> C6rdoba.<br />

lhn rea which suffered most damage was in the north central part <strong>of</strong><br />

the province <strong>of</strong> San Juan, specially the <strong>de</strong>partments <strong>of</strong> Jachal, Iglesia,<br />

Albardon, Angaco and San Mart n, which suffered a total <strong>of</strong> 50 killed. Great<br />

areas were observed with soil .1 iquefaction (extensives cracks, subsi<strong>de</strong>nce<br />

uplift <strong>of</strong> tihe hottom <strong>of</strong> irrigation cannals, inundated streets).<br />

The localit:ies with greatest damage were Nogna and Iglesia, where 100%<br />

<strong>of</strong> the const ruc tions we:e <strong>de</strong>stroyed. There are reports <strong>of</strong> the fall <strong>of</strong> trees<br />

and great laudl i<strong>de</strong>s in nearby mountains. There were also numerous aftershocks,<br />

some <strong>of</strong> great intensity, during the first month after the main event.<br />

4. South Mendoza Earthquake, 30 May 1929.<br />

This event damaged two localities in the south <strong>of</strong> the province <strong>of</strong>
