Mendoza: Vil].a Atucl and las tlalvinas, which had some 900 inhabitants each.<br />

In the Villa Atuel it caused 17 <strong>de</strong>aths and 11 woun<strong>de</strong>d, whereas in Las Malvinas<br />

there were 23 <strong>de</strong>aths and 31 woun<strong>de</strong>d.<br />

In Vil.a Atne I , extensive areas with liquefaction <strong>of</strong> soils, large crack.<br />

<strong>of</strong> the ground, sand and and<br />

mud boils streets inundated by un<strong>de</strong>rground water,<br />

were repor ted.<br />

There were many aftershocks, <strong>of</strong> which, approximately 20 were felt during<br />

the first day after the main shock.<br />

5. Sampa cho (C5rdoeha) Earthqu ake, 11 June 1934.<br />

This was an ea rthquake which produced much damage in a relatively small<br />

area. An aftershock <strong>of</strong> the same mignitu<strong>de</strong> as the main shock occurred less<br />

than threc hours later.<br />

During the first 24 hours there were approximately 100 aftershocks, six<br />

<strong>of</strong> which Id intensities greater than IV. 90% <strong>of</strong> the constructions were <strong>de</strong>stroyed<br />

or .eft "ninhahitable.<br />

6. San JIuan Earthquake, 15 January 194".<br />

This earthquake caused the highest number <strong>of</strong> casualties in the Republic<br />

<strong>of</strong> Argentina. It is estimated that there were approximately 10,000 killed.<br />

It affected a]ll <strong>of</strong> the province <strong>of</strong> San Juan, specially the capital city<br />

where most <strong>of</strong> the population lived.<br />

It produced 'nwe damage in the province <strong>of</strong> Nendoza. Aftershocks were<br />

perceived, some <strong>of</strong>? them intense, immediately after the main event, <strong>de</strong>caying<br />

rapidly wit time.<br />

A <strong>sur</strong>face crack was observed in place called La Laja, corresponding to<br />

an inverse fault with 0.30 cm <strong>of</strong> maximum <strong>de</strong>splacement, with a longitu<strong>de</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

approximately 7 km.<br />

7. Salta Earthquake, 25 August 1948.<br />

The epicenter was located in the <strong>de</strong>partment <strong>of</strong> Anta, province <strong>of</strong> Salta,<br />

a region with a very low population <strong>de</strong>nsity. Great <strong>de</strong>struction was observed<br />

in the fo l 'wing localities: Las V0boras, El Piquete, El Rey, Palomitas,<br />

Santa Rita, Las P'avas and Au ta. For the last three places, there were reports<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>de</strong>ep cracks in the ground through which abundant un<strong>de</strong>rground water came<br />

through; this is associated with soil liquefaction phenomena.<br />

3. San Juan Earthquake, 23 November 1977.<br />

This event produced consi<strong>de</strong>rale damage throughout the province <strong>of</strong> San<br />

Juan, specially in the city <strong>of</strong> Caucete where it caused 70 <strong>de</strong>aths and 300<br />

voun<strong>de</strong>d. It al so caused camage <strong>of</strong> certain importance in some aveas <strong>of</strong> the<br />

)rovinces f Mendoza and La Rioja. Cracks were observed in buildings in<br />

16rdoLa and San Luis. Great areas suffered soil liquefaction which produced<br />

;erious damage to roads, irrigation cannals and cultivated areas. A great
