THE INITIATIVE BEHIND ~HE COLLECTION
The idea o f statting a collection o f visual art created on the basts of olfactory
perceptions took shape 1n 1978, as a result of the exh1bition at the Fundació Joan
Miró In Barcelona entitled 0/factory Suggestions, in which I was involved along
w1th a number o f other perfumers. The theme was very broad and what the shaw
set out to do was to engage with a large part of the olfactory spectrum: body
smells, the sme lis of colours, thc smells of animals, the olfactory emanations of
raw matenals (plants). the physiology of olfaction, smell a nd popular culture,
fash1ons in smells a nd the literature of smells.
When I realized that there was noth1ng exhibited on the walls at this shaw, I fel!
the need to get 1n touch wrth artists in person, to involve them 10 my 1n•tialive
and invrte thcrn lo give form to olfactory sensatíons in their work.
them a mechanism for connectíng w1th a different
level of communícatíon, wíth a highly developed
language, both imaginative and intellectual, which
interprets in conscious visual form the inhalation of
the outside world.
learning to Smell1n order to Understand -
Understanding ín order to Smell Better
Voir et comprendre la peinture [Seeing and
Understanding Painting] is the title of a book
by Bernard Rancillac in which he draws on his
experience as a painter provi de us with the keys
to the doors of the pictorial realm, analysing the
different levels of seeing that to the spectator looks
to the coded language of art.
'Smelling and Understanding Painting' is my own
personal versíon of Rancillac's title and some passages
from his book, draw~ng on my own experíence to show
how another sense, such as smell, can also contribute
to our understanding of the language o f art.
Art is a coded language, so that it is essential to
acquire a special expertise with which to understand
it, just as it is not enough to breathe in through one's
nose, to smell, in order to comprehend the codes of
a perfume. The gaze we d1rect at the outside world
is not the same as the gaze we turn on a work of
art. This mechan1sm of percepüon, like that of smell,
adapts to the nature ot the objects perceived.
The physical senses begin to act at birth. and ;t is very
probable that the first th1ng you learned to distínguish
in life is the sme li of your mother, the smell of food,
of home, and although ít may not be very evident it
is almost certa1n that we a re gutded by our sense o f
smell in discovering the world around us.
The sense o f smell is one of the most important
capacities we have for our development.
Everything has a smell, and while we can suppress the
response of any of our other senses (by closing our
eyes or mouth, c:overing our ears, or simply putting
our hands In our pockets) it is absolutely impossible to
shut off the smeH- i f we did, we would suffoc:ate.
/>5 humans, from the moment we are born we
ac:cumulate olfactory experiences. memory. knowledge,
and as we grow as social beings we set about
aromat1zing all kinds of connota tions, relig1ous,
technical, political, literary and so on. Perceive the
physical world almost effortlessly, and is to acqufre a
specíalized vísion when some learning is indispensable.
As Ranci llac says, ' ... no one has become a painter by
the mere fact of contemplating na tu re, a lovely tree,
a beautiful woman ... '; similarly, no one has become
I uestra experiencia del conocimjenro
THE SUBJECTIFICATION AND ATTEMPTED REBELUON OF
SM ELL: A MEDITATION ON THE SENSES
Smell is a rather duplicitous subject which requires a great
deal of consideration. Ata chemosensorv level, sensations
supply a living organism with universal knowledge in a raw
form. I am less interested in discussing sensations in their
raw form. Not because purity is unim portant, but beca use lt
does not contain the romance of the human ego. Smell would
not be duplicitous- or very interesting-if it remained an
immaculate conception that one's experiences did not corrupl
Humans suffer from an inadequacy that is a result of trying
to define cselfo in isolation to a universal whole-otherwise
known as cultivation of tile ego. As such, we a re reductive
in our approach to sensations. Our experience o f universal
knowledge is passed through a series o f 'subject1fying'
lenses. These lenses act as filters. aiding in 1he concealment
of the shame we face in striving for anonymitv-often
blurring boundaries in order to confuse us so that we
rema in dysfunctional a nd dependent on the quest Alliance
with the ego is forged so that we may suffer. Senses depend
oh us to communicate them so that they may exist.
The duplicitous nawre of the senses is revealed when a pure
essence, such as smell, becomes manipulated and conlrolled
by our individuality-then suddenly rebels at random.
Smell tried to rebel from me not too long ago. lt was an
ordinarily mundane day. I was adequately present Smell
appropriately aided my shoe from avoiding a pile of dog shit
on the sidewalk. A woman with a particular perfume passed
by. I was abruptly ripped from my current location in to a
sexual experience I had more than 20 years ago? When I say
ripped, I was literally tasting the flesh of this individual in
my mouth- feeling her sweat agai11st me. Why that sexual
memory? Why that sme/I? Should !look thtS person up? ls my
fote punching me in the nose? Should I ho ve followed the
woman with the perfume? Should I have sex with her?
Smell rebelled for one split second a nd l was deeply
suffering. You mig ht have had s1milar nostalgia being thrust
upon you involuntarily.
Smell's strategy of rebellion is to use the inadequades
of our memories against us. Yet, ironically, the strategy
manages to elucidate the captivity of the senses, rather than
genera te any libemtion. Even the moment of de fiance itself
is dependent upon the existence of our experiences. Smell
cannot escape the el• in us any more than we can escape its
desi re to be rid of our purpose for it We place suffering on
smell so that we might suffer ourselves.
Unti I we manipula te smell for our own use, it is merely a
chemosensory phenomenon-a rnon-sense•.
'Every lamp is a plant, the perfume is the light:
Víctor Hugo.
In some way there is presented ín paintings a límit idea or
there is n attempt to arrive at the culmination of what one,
in one's knowledge of history, has made one's own.
Borges affirmed a unlty In poetry: he 'expressed the opinion
that all the poems of the past, present and future were
episodes or fragments of a single infinite poem [ ... ):
Coleridge wondered in a note: 'I f a man could pass through
Paradise in a dream, and have a flower presented to him [ ... )
what then?' This idea has the unity of a goa!. In painting there is
no act that is not the culmination of a series of intentions and
effects. Colerídge's flower evokes this essentlally panthefstic idea
92
o f art The one true rec:ollection o ne would have, i f on waking
I was thinking about metancholy when I pamted the p1cture
Granville rec:ounts of Byton ... Lord Byron bought an intellectual
bear that lived alone in the mountains, and brought it to stay
In the fullness o f time, ttred o f solitud e a nd poetry, the bear
Basically, melancholy, like any subjecr I use or discover, is
like the seent of Coleridge's flower. lt is an lmagination that
has the unity a nd integrfty of an end.
There is somethlng in smells that subsiSts. This associates 1tself
•SMELL OF SANCTITY•
Wh~n a man who has come to be something more than a
man dies. h1s body dees not putrefy. lt is as cold as any other
dead body bul dees not rot away, it remaíns here, inside its
cas~et of gleaming wood, with its gleaming apparel, its skin
red and gleaming, stlll, as if waiting to be photographed.
Thus we know it is a samt. For that reason, a nd because it
smells good. At first it smells of incense and white smoke,
a very llttle, hardly atall. Then the aroma becomes more
lntense. a nd then 11 seems to smell of something else. like
soap, and that soap makes its lather of smell, and its funeral
smell. which a re not seen, but the air carries them and they
smell more a nd more. First they fill the church where the
coffin lies a nd ascend the spiral sta~rcase of the belfry. They
perfume the streets a nd the squares and enter in to the
people's houses a nd everybody reallzes, even in the open
fields outside the city. and in the paths of the thick forest,
and on the river, on the hills and on the snow-covered
mountains, in the lightless caves. on the beaches and on the
cliffs of the coast, that that man was something more than a
man because he died with a smell of sanctity.
What Mother Painting I, and 'mother painting' in general,
smells o f to me
- Strange proposition -
lt has rarely occurred to me to relate painting to an aroma
or a perfume. Almost never. I remember, however, a strange
pcriod, a tough pcriod rn my li fe, a time of transit10n a nd
illnesses relatcd to the cullnary practice of art, in which the
smell or turpentine, oli parnt a nd a motley mix of fats. fruit
ot the imagination and the practice of subsistence living
made me nauseous a nd have bad vibra tions in my liver. My
body couldn't tolera te those essences and I had togo over
to acrylic derivatives lnsiprd, odourless paint, to be sure,
but I managed to get a lot out of it once I acclimatized
myself to its new a nd flavourless proper ties. Orat least
that's what those who really know what l've done with rt
say. l loved tu rpentme, nat only its smell but its imaginable
rtavour I wou ld have endcd up drinking turpentine, I assure
you Boyish passion mevitably drew mc towards rt, but my
body's contradictory metabolism put an end to one of the
greatest pleasures o f my early youth. Medica i prescription
irremediable ... erther that or you'll be in a bad way for the
rest or your li fe.
Personally, l've always felt paintmg is in a close communion
with music. The story o f musrc. of my music, is the story of
my painting. Ot paintrng ... a nd of sculpture, of photography
as well, a nd of all that can emerge from or enter in to the
depths of spiriL Nat with perfume, I msist. Although ... now
that I get it, after tu rning it over a nd over, on account of the
strange proposition that l'm caught up in at this momen t.
a nd have been for the tast ten days or so, that isn't really
so much the case as l've been trying to make ou t. lt must
simply be that for whatever reason -ancestral neglect,
lack of culture in this regard or an mnate tendency towards
other realms of pleasure - perhaps i t's only now that l've
started to give it the importance it deserves. Thank heaven
that there's always someone just around the corner to help
vou to see- to fi nd - what you can't sec for yourself. Or
what you can't smell.
Enrich or die; extend the enJovment or never say another
word. Art is adding: continua! crearien.
In this rega rd, then, Mother Painting ls an accumulation of
fragrant proposats. In the blínk of an eye, see what a change!
Mother Parntrng is, above all, the smell of a man's suffering, a
man who unwittlngly introduced me to rt more than twenty
years aga. Juan, a printer by trade, who had to be taken away
from his Roland beca use he would have díed of madness for it
He fe li rn love with the machine a nd wouldn't I et anyone touch
11. a nd he did all of the shifts himself until anaemia, the disease
