10 | UW 10 | 2014 | Ausstellungen since 2014 New national recognized breeds Since 2014 the German Sighthound Associaton is in charge for some lately nationally recognized breeds: A very active community of Siliken Windsprites – a young Sighthound breed originating from the United States as well as the old breed Taigan from Kirgistan. Two more Mediterranean breeds as well have been notionally recognized since then: The Podenco Andaluz and the Kritikos Lagonikos (Cretan Hound). all over Germany. – The popular Sighthound Magazine “Unsere Windhunde” appears monthly with more than 4.000 copies to report about the activities in Germany and abroad. In 2016 the EIWC Congress (by the Federation of European Irish Wolfhound Clubs – now active worldwide) including an Irish Wolfhound specialty took place for the 2nd time in Germany and was considered by all Irish Wolfhound fanciers around the globe as a huge success. A specialty for all Sighthounds took place the last day at the unique show ground of Hardenberg Castle close to Hannover. At the end of last year the first German Sighthound Congress was another highlight at our clubs history offering a great selection to the audience of club members representing most of the breeds. In the evening only qualified dogs were competing at the final for the new title “Sighthound of the Year” in shows, lure coursing, racing as well as the combination of “beauty and performance”. The event was highly appreciated by the participants and guests. A similar evening event took place five years ago to celebrate the 120th Anniversary of the club. Next year’s Donaueschingen Sighthound Festival 2018 will celebrate it’s 25th anniversary. – We are very much looking forward welcoming you once again at the greatest show of the German Sighthound Association and nowadays Europe’s greatest Specialty for all Sighthounds and Mediterranean Breeds. This article is based on publications by Ute Lennartz and Dagmar Hintzenberg-Freisleben pubished at the 100th anniversary of the German Sighthound Association 25 years ago. Recently compiled and added in 2017 by Olaf Knauber, Communication & Marketing manager of the German Sighthound Association to be published at the 1st Donaueschingen Sighthound Festival Journal. Birknershof Mr Ed 125 Years with passion for Sightounds – where are we compared 125 years ago? – With quite active clubs for Sighthound sport (racing or lure coursing) all over Germany and several successful breeders – both with long time experience and breeders of a new generation as well – the future of the German Sighthound Association looks bright. Founded in 1892 by 19 members of Barzoi fanciers, the German Sighthound Association (www.dwzrv.com) has gone through good and bad times. Today the Club is Europe’s biggest Association for Sighthounds with almost 4.000 member. 22 Sighthounds and Mediterranean breeds of FCI group 5*are registered at the German Sighthound Association’s stud book being published every two years. (* The other Mediterranean breeds include the Pharaoh Hounds “Kelb-Tal-Fenek” from Malta, the Cirneco dell’ Etna, the Portugues Warren Hound (Podengo Portugues in different sizes and varieties) as well as the Ibizan Hounds (Podenco Ibicenco short haired and wired haired) as well as the Podenco Canario.) More than 80 CC shows are taking place every year as Specialties organized by the Sighthound Association or as International All Breed shows organized by the German Kennel Club.
