A fully interactive database on venomous snakes
from Africa.
VENOMS is a database offering a unique variety of information
in the field of venomous animals and their venoms that
has been developed at Atheris Labs over the past decade. The
module on snakes contains an exhaustive list of some 1,100
different venomous snakes of the world with full descriptions
including complete zoological classification according to the
latest systematic nomenclature, actual scientific name, common
names (in English, French, German and local language), synonyms,
geographical range with illustrated colour geographic
maps, and many professional colour pictures of most animals.
Résumés.
The database is crosslinked to other modules including for
example a complete list of all amino acid sequences of venomous
animals proteins that have been described so far. This
registry contains more some 2,500 toxins and enzymes with
as much structural and functional information as possible for
each of them, together with direct links to the animals description
and bibliographical references. The database is further
incremented with an extensive bibliography containing
some 250,000 references covering all publications in the field
of venomous animals, including features such as title, authors,
abstract, source, year of publication and keywords.
More recently, we have initiated a collaboration with IRD,
focusing on African snakes in a first instance. Our goal is to
extend the work to clinical aspects related to snakebite, envenomation
and treatments with deep annotation for each have
established an easy to use check-list with questions related to
the morphology, geographic range or envenomation symptoms.
This is aimed at facilitating the animal’s identification on-line
though a easy to use guided interface. The whole database has
been developed for a worldwide access through Internet, and
we also plan a version on CD-Rom. The module on venomous
snakes of the world will officially be launched by the end of
2004, and we hope to include the clinical module for African
snakes in 2005, ideally free of charge for not-profit African
institutions.
