crater and Lavendula stricta on tuff<br />

2. Lower montane zone <strong>of</strong> Jebel Marra, 1,000-2,000 m: Ficus spp., especially<br />

F. grapholocarpa and Cor dia abyssinica, with grasses Cymbopogon<br />

spp., Hyparrhenia pseudocymbaria and Andropogon gayanus. Scattered<br />

Euphorbia candelabrum<br />

3. Upland gallery forests <strong>of</strong> the western perennial streams <strong>of</strong> Jebel Marra:<br />

Anogeissus schimperi, <strong>of</strong>ten in pure stands with closed canopy, with<br />

some Ficus spp., Cordia abyssinica and Terminalia brownii<br />

B. Woodland savanna <strong>of</strong> the western Archaean Plateau<br />

4. Anogeissus schimperi woodland savanna <strong>of</strong> the upper Wadi \Azum<br />

basin, associated with Acacia seyal, Lannea humilis and Albizzia sericocephala,<br />

growing to average height <strong>of</strong> 6-7 m, occasionally to 12 m.<br />

Some thicket formation and commonly a shrub layer to 2 m, including<br />

Grewia tenax, Combretum aculeatum and Cadaba glandulosa. Grasses<br />
