1. Upper montane zone of Jebel Marra, above 2,000 m: mainly open grassland,
Hyparrhenia multiplex, with Andropogon linearis and, on summits,
Themeda triandra. Scattered Olea laperrini; Blaeria spicata in
crater and Lavendula stricta on tuff
2. Lower montane zone of Jebel Marra, 1,000-2,000 m: Ficus spp., especially
F. grapholocarpa and Cor dia abyssinica, with grasses Cymbopogon
spp., Hyparrhenia pseudocymbaria and Andropogon gayanus. Scattered
Euphorbia candelabrum
3. Upland gallery forests of the western perennial streams of Jebel Marra:
Anogeissus schimperi, often in pure stands with closed canopy, with
some Ficus spp., Cordia abyssinica and Terminalia brownii
B. Woodland savanna of the western Archaean Plateau
4. Anogeissus schimperi woodland savanna of the upper Wadi \Azum
basin, associated with Acacia seyal, Lannea humilis and Albizzia sericocephala,
growing to average height of 6-7 m, occasionally to 12 m.
Some thicket formation and commonly a shrub layer to 2 m, including
Grewia tenax, Combretum aculeatum and Cadaba glandulosa. Grasses
