EATING DYSFUNCTION POSITION PAPER (1996)
In their entry-level academic programs, occupational therapy practitioners are trained in many
approaches for the evaluation and intervention of the performance components and performance area of
eating dysfunction. Occupational therapy assistants may contribute observations for evaluation and
implement treatment programs for eating and feeding under the supervision of a registered occupational
therapist. For a specialty practice area such as dysphagia intervention, advanced learning opportunities
to increase competency are necessary. As in all aspects of occupational therapy practice, the emphasis
in eating intervention is on maximizing the functional independence and overall health, well-being, and
safety of the client.
