✒BERTRAND BOLDUCWHERE BIOTECH MEETSBUSINESSBertrand Bolduc, pharmacist and MBA (2000),President and CEO of Mistral Pharma, hasexperience and expertise that many veteranbusiness leaders would envy. In a fewshort years, he has already learned thesecrets of obtaining financing, listing stockon the exchange and signing partnershipagreements.Mistral Pharma is an emerging pharmaceuticalcompany that uses three innovativetechnologies to design controlled-releasedrugs – in other words, improved or valueaddedversions of existing ones. From itsinception in September 2003, it nowconsists of eight scientists and can counton several partnerships. It was listed on theTSX Venture Exchange in April 2005 (MIP).A few months later, the results of clinicaltrials for two of the drugs developed bythe company, including one formulationco-invented by Bertrand Bolduc himself,were released.In 1990, after completing his studies inpharmacy, Bertrand was already interestedin a career in industry, rather than practisingin a hospital or a dispensary. While workingfor Axcan Pharma, he was involved inacquiring Scandipharm, a US pharmaceuticalscompany, and obtaining interim financingof US$100 million from the Caisse de dépôtet placement du Québec. He was alsothe one who negotiated the sale of certainassets and the acquisition of Photofrin®from QLT, a $60 million transaction, andhelped get Axcan listed on NASDAQ. Allthis, and more, without any formal businesstraining! Later, his MBA studies would bean enriching experience that gave him newtools allowing him to draw on his scientificbackground and make the most of hisentrepreneurial skills at the same time.Bertrand Bolduc is an outstanding communicator,and since 2001 has been thePresident and spokesperson of BIOQuebec,the Quebec biotechnology and life scienceindustry association, with 250 membercompanies. In that capacity he chaired thebiotech summit in 2002 and oversaw thecreation of Biolevier, a $100 million programthat allowed many firms to survive theaftermath of the techno bubble. He isextremely interested in the whole questionof financing for biotech companies.He is a networker par excellence, and hasbeen recognized with many distinctionsin both the scientific and business worlds.And at age 38, Bertrand Bolduc is convincedthat his best years lie ahead!des copies à valeur ajoutée de médicaments existants. Dans certains cas, l’ingrédient actif peutmême être libéré en quantité différente selon l’heure du jour, ensynchronisation avec les symptômes de la maladie, ce qui peutêtre bénéfique pour un patient souffrant d’arthrite, par exemple,la douleur étant plus vive le matin. Les technologies de MistralPharma permettent aussi de formuler plusieurs médicamentsen un seul comprimé et de les libérer de façon graduelle, selon unhoraire précis. Enfin, elles simplifient la fabrication des comprimés,entraînant une réduction des coûts de production.« Pour différentes raisons, précise Bertrand Bolduc, un nouveaumédicament n’a pas toujours une formulation optimale. Comme ilfaut compter jusqu’à dix années de sa conception à sa mise enmarché, on ne se concentre pas sur ce point. Le lancement d’unenouvelle formulation d’un médicament existant, qui ne demande quedeux ou trois ans, comporte, par ailleurs, beaucoup moins de risqueset représente une valeur ajoutée pour les patients. Nous donnons enquelque sorte une deuxième vie à un produit. » Apprendre, étudierun produit existant pour chercher à en améliorer différentesfacettes, ce sont les motivations qui poussent Bertrand Bolduc àenfiler, encore régulièrement, son sarrau de pharmacien et à se rendreen officine pour repérer des produits sur lesquels travailler.Mistral Pharma planche actuellement sur trois produitsgénériques – l’un en endocrinologie, l’un en urologie et un dernierdans le domaine cardiovasculaire – ainsi que sur un produit demarque, le MIST-B01, formulation uniquotidienne d’un médicamenten vente depuis 30 ans et auquel on trouve encore de nouvellesindications. Le MIST-B01 a passé avec succès les essais pilotespharmacocinétiques en septembre 2005 ; il devrait être soumisaux autorités réglementaires au printemps 2008.Le président du conseil de Mistral Pharma et président et chefde la direction de Warnex Pharma, Mark Busgang, a recrutéBertrand Bolduc. Il l’a rencontré alors que celui-ci travaillait chezAxcan Pharma et faisait partie de l’équipe qui procédait à la ventede certains actifs. « Bertrand a su créer un profil, une identitépour Mistral Pharma. Il connaît non seulement l’aspect scientifiquede l’industrie, mais il possède aussi une excellente compréhensiondes marchés financiers. Il a très bien dirigé l’opération de prisede contrôle inversée de Capital Black Point qui a permis l’inscriptionde la société à la Bourse de croissance TSX. J’ai très bon espoir queMistral Pharma réussira à mettre au point de nouveaux produitsau cours des prochaines années. »Un parcours ascendantPharmacien de formation (B. Pharm. 1990, U. de M.), BertrandBolduc a amorcé sa carrière chez Servier Canada, comme chefde projet. Sa première grande réalisation fut le lancement sur lemarché canadien de Coversyl ® , un IECA (inhibiteur de l’enzymede conversion de l’angiotensine).
