SPECIAL REPORTMANAGINGCREATIVITYNEW PROJECT MANAGEMENT STRATEGIESUNLEASH THE CREATIVE PROCESSAs globalization continues to dominate the business landscape, the ability to think across multiple boundaries has becomea necessary component of international success. At the coreof this strategic shift, the concept of project managementhas evolved into a multifaceted discipline requiring skill sets rarelyemployed in the industrial age. Creativity has been the drivingforce behind a revolution of sorts that now defines the roleof project management as trying to bring creative ideas intoan efficient managerial process. BY DAVID PYE“THE CONCEPT of project managementbegan as a predictive and precise sciencethat was focused on the ultimate goal ofdiminishing uncertainty,” explains LaurentSimon, Assistant Professor in the Departmentof Management. “That era produceda traditional project management processthat was primarily concerned with analysis, planning and project control.”The limits of creative designTraditional project management beganwith a creative idea and was followedby a line of sequential processes thatwould ultimately result in the realizationof a project. Following the introduction ofa creative idea, a project manager wouldconcentrate on moving the idea towarda prototype stage, ultimately followed bythe production process.“The problem with that approach is thatwhen something went wrong downstream, you were unable to adjust, because thecreative process was already in motion andwas irreversible,” says Patrick Cohendet,Visiting Professor at HEC Montréal in theDepartment of International Business and24HEC Montréal MAG › Printemps 2006
