Derrière les larges baies vitrées dela vigie, qui offrent une vue d’ensemble sur leport, une dizaine de personnes, dirigées depuis1997 par le commandant Philippe Auzou, surveillentvotre arrivée. « La capitainerie, c’est le centrenévralgique <strong>du</strong> port, explique le commandant.Nous coordonnons l’ensemble des services portuaires,recevons les appels radio ou téléphoniques,supervisons le pilotage, le lamanage oule remorquage des bateaux. Nous sommes encharge de la sécurité et de la sauvegarde environnementale<strong>du</strong> port. Une de nos activités quotidiennesest, par exemple, le déroulé d’escale.Quand un navire s’annonce, nous vérifions ses caractéristiques,son tirant d’eau, sa marchandiseet organisons ensuite l’escale pour qu’ellese passe le mieux possible. » Le commandantAuzou, lui, fait le lien entre les différents intervenants,des éclusiers aux agents consignatairesreprésentant les armateurs des navires. Il s’interrogeégalement sur l’exploitation commerciale<strong>du</strong> port, son développement futur : « C’est unmétier très varié où je vais de surprises ensurprises. J’ai vécu des événements dont je mesouviendrai : les crues <strong>du</strong> canal lors de la tempêtede 1999, le 60 ème anniversaire <strong>du</strong> débarquementqui a vu 17 paquebots se cotoyer pendant> Capitainerie - Terre-plein des écluses -14150 Ouistreham - Tél. 02 31 36 22 00Les portes <strong>du</strong> portLes éclusesès la décision prise de creuser un canalD entre Caen et la mer*, il est apparu évidentque des écluses seraient érigées côté mer,à Ouistreham. En 1853, la <strong>du</strong>ne est percée pourque le canal puisse rejoindre la mer et laconstruction de la première écluse débute pours’achever en 1857. Une seconde sera construiteentre 1895 et 1903. Elles seront modifiées et moderniséesau fil des années, pour accueillir desnavires de plus fort tonnage notamment. En1960, la première écluse sera considérablementagrandie. L’écluse ouest mesure à ce jour 225mètres sur 28,45, l’écluse est, 181 sur 18,8.L’écluse est, la plus petite, sert de porte intermédiaireet permet de faire des demi-sas pouréconomiser l’eau de l’Orne, toujours dans unsouci de préservation environnementale. Ellesert surtout au passage des bateaux de plaisance,là où l’écluse ouest sert essentiellementà celui des navires de commerce. Ce sont lesvingt éclusiers de la capitainerie qui, sur leurs tableauxde bords, actionnent les manettes desécluses, après que le bateau amené par la pilotineait atteint les portes <strong>du</strong> port. In 1853 the<strong>du</strong>ne was pierced to allowwater from the canal to jointhe sea thus beginning theconstruction of the firstlock (to be finished in 1857).The second was erectedbetween 1895 and 1903.They have been modifiedand modernized over thecourse of the years to accommodatelarger vessels.In 1960, the first lock wasconsiderably enlarged. Todaythe western lock measures225m by 28.45m while theeastern lock measures 181mAhoy there captain!Port authorityAt the entrance to theport of Ouistreham,between two tidal locks,sits a big white and greybuilding: the port authorityof Caen and Ouistreham.Behind the large bay windowsof the lookout post,which allows a view ofthe whole port, a dozenpeople under the directionof Philippe Auzou, watchover your arrival. "The portauthority is the centralnervous system of theport," explains the captain."We coordinate all portservices, receive all radioand telephone calls,and supervise navigation,docking and towing ofboats. We're in charge ofsecurity and environmentalpreservation around theport. One of our dailytasks, for example, is theorganization of stopovers.When a ship arrives, wecheck its characteristics,its draught, and its merchandisein order to bestorganize its stay at port."Captain Auzou acts as thego-between for all diffe-by 18.80m. With environmentalpreservation inmind, the smaller easternlock serves as an intermediarygate, acting as a sidepond for the western lockand saving water from theOrne River. Is is mostlyused by pleasure boatswhereas the western lockis reserved for commercialships. Twenty lock keepersfrom the port authorityPhilippe Auzourent professions, fromlock keepers to consigneesrepresenting ship-owners.He also examines the commercialexploitation ofthe port and its possiblefuture development. "It'sa very varied job, full ofsurprises. I've had manymemorable experiences:the flooding of the canal<strong>du</strong>ring the 1999 storm, the60th anniversary of theNormandy landings when17 cruise ships rubbed elbowswith each other forseveral days in the port orthe start of the Figaroboat races in 2004 and2007.
