Pendant près de troisdécennies, il pêchera en Mer du Nord, dans laManche et dans l’Atlantique nord. « Il y avaitbeaucoup de bons jours et quelques mauvais. »Le pire, c’est quand « à près de cent mètres denous, on a vu des collègues chavirer dans la tempête.Le bateau et l’équipage ont disparu corpset âmes. » Il a tout de même continué. « Unefois que la mer t’a happé, tu ne peux plus t’ensortir. » Quand ses enfants ont été suffisammentgrands, il les a emmenés avec lui sur son bateau.L’avant-port dePort-en-BessinIl fallait qu’ils apprennent à connaître la vie depécheur. Deux de ses trois fils ont repris le flambeauet passent eux aussi devant les pimpantsfanaux, à l’entrée du port, sur leurs bateaux. Ilne s’est pas autorisé à avoir peur pour eux. Parceque « ça ne sert à rien. » Maintenant, il reste àterre. Dans son petit atelier sur le port, il fabriquedes filets pour ses collègues. Encore aujourd’hui,il connaît chaque homme qui prend la mer depuisPort-en-Bessin. Patrick James, charpentier de marine originairedu sud Manche, rejoint avec plaisir Port-en-Bessin et une entreprise dans laquelle il avaittravaillé auparavant pendant 18 ans. « Placés surle port, à cet endroit, les chantiers du Bessin sontidéalement situés. Nous sommes complémentairesde toutes les entreprises nautiques présentes: la clientèle vient de partout et des portsalentours. C’est une force. Les clients viennentaussi pour notre expérience, le bouche-à-oreillefonctionne bien. » De la construction bois à la réparationpour le polyester, les chantiers « James» prennent en charge les bateaux de pêchecomme les bateaux de plaisance. De l’automne2009 à l’été 2010, les chantiers abritent le Scaf,un chalutier coquillard qu’ils construisent pour unpêcheur de Port-en-Bessin. « Le bateau en luimême,faire de la construction neuve, un vraiboulot de charpentier de marine et un travaild’ébéniste pour l’intérieur, voilà l’essence denotre métier, poursuit Patrick James.
