Historiquement, aprèsla construction du canal, les échanges commerciauxenfin rendus possibles, se densifient, avecl’Angleterre notamment : cidre et eau-de-vie, poterieou pierre à bâtir. De nos jours deux activitésprincipales caractérisent le port de Caen : le trafictransmanche d’une part, entre Ouistreham etPortsmouth, soit trois à quatre escales par jour etplus d’un million de passagers par an ; les trafics àl’import et à l’export d’autre part. Theport's commercial activity isconcentrated around threenavigable zones: the Ouistrehamouter harbour at theentrance to the Orne Estuary,the canal and thewet dock at the heart ofthe city. Historically speaking,once the constructionof the canal was finished,trade intensified, with En-gland in particular. Ciderand eau-de-vie, along withpottery and stone forconstruction, regularly exchangedhands. Depuis le port,situé en plein cœur de la ville, vos pas vousmènent d’abord à l’église Saint-Pierre et au châteauducal. La première, sise sur la place dumême nom est un point central de la ville. L’édificeactuel fut érigé entre le XIII ème et le XVI èmesiècle. Saint-Pierre se distingue notamment par satour-clocher surmontée d’une flèche gothiquehaute de 75 m. Le château qui la surplombe datedu XI ème siècle. Cette forteresse entourée de fossésa été construite sous le règne de Guillaumele Conquérant. Dans son enceinte, l’actuelMusée des Beaux-Arts et le Musée de Norman-die, des expositions temporaires (salle de l’Échiquier), etc. Une nouvelle campagne de fouillesarchéologiques y a débuté à l’été 2011 et sepoursuivra à l’été 2012… Guillaume, figure pharede l’histoire de Caen et de la Normandie, décida,conjointement à l’édification du château, laconstruction des deux abbayes. L’une, l’Abbayeaux-Hommes,abrite aujourd’hui l’hôtel de ville ;l’autre, l’Abbaye-aux-Dames, rassemble les bureauxdu conseil régional. Concurrentto the construction ofthe castle, William, a keyfigure in Caen and Normandy'shistory, decided tobuild two abbeys. The first,the Men's Abbey, nowhouses the Town Hall; thesecond, the Ladies' Abbey,is home to the RegionalCouncil offices. Among thetown's finest architecturalmasterpieces, they werespared during the 1944bombings that ravagedCaen, yet offered one ofthe most striking emblemsof post-war reconstruction.But that's another story...Naviguez dans le dédale des bassins courseullaisUne longue estacade de bois à bâbord, un imposantcalvaire à tribord. À elle seule, l’entrée dans Courseulles,port de pêche animé, procure des imagessingulières. Dans le petit bassin, la rumeur de la villen’est jamais loin. On s’amarre à deux pas des restaurantsde fruits de mer et des commerçants. Les pêcheursvendent ici le produit de leur pêche, sitôt débarquée.Une escale vivante, mais également une porte ouvertesur la mémoire. Les plages du D.Day sont toutesproches, à l’image d’Arromanches, à seulement 10 millesdans l’ouest.Navigate the labyrinth of CourseullesWith a long woodenlanding stage on theport side and an impressivecross to starboard,the entrance to thisanimated fishing harbouris quite remarkable. Thehum of the town is neverfar from the docks wherefishermen sell the day'scatch as soon as it isunloaded and wherevisitors can moor theirboats just a hop anda skip from seafood restaurantsand shops.
