Ainsi, dans <strong>le</strong>s climats maritimes humides et atempérature très é<strong>le</strong>vée, il faut citer surtout Madère, Ténériffe,<strong>le</strong>s î<strong>le</strong>s Canaries ; dans <strong>le</strong>s climats maritimes humides à températuremodérée, l'î<strong>le</strong> de Bute et <strong>le</strong>s î<strong>le</strong>s Hébrides; dans <strong>le</strong>s climatsmaritimes de moyenne humidité, il faut placer Alger, Ajaccio,la Riviera di Levente et <strong>le</strong>s vil<strong>le</strong>s qui y sont renfermées, Fi<strong>le</strong> deWight; dans <strong>le</strong>s climats maritimes chauds et secs, la rivieradiPonente, c'est-à-dire toutes <strong>le</strong>s stations comprises depuis Hyèresjusqu'à San-Remo.Quant aux climats continentaux, la division en climats d'altitudeet climats de plaine est faci<strong>le</strong>ment compréhensib<strong>le</strong> ; dans<strong>le</strong> climat d'altitude sont toutes ces stations établies à grands fraisdans FEngadine, tel<strong>le</strong>s que Davos-Platz, Davos-Dorfli, Saint-Moritz, Sarmaden, etc. Dans <strong>le</strong>s climats de plaine sont Pise,.Pau, Amélie-<strong>le</strong>s-Bains, l'Egypte, etc.Je ne puis ici, messieurs, vous décrire toutes ces stations, ets'il me fallait vous citer <strong>le</strong>s avantages et <strong>le</strong>s inconvénients dechacune d'el<strong>le</strong>s, ce cours tout entier n'y eût pas suffi. Aussi, jevais ici vous par<strong>le</strong>r très brièvement des indications thérapeutiquesqui décou<strong>le</strong>nt des considérations dans <strong>le</strong>squel<strong>le</strong>s je viensd'entrer, et parmi <strong>le</strong>s maladies tributaires du traitement climatérique,je signa<strong>le</strong>rai surtout <strong>le</strong> rhumatisme, l'albuminurie, lascrofu<strong>le</strong> et enfin <strong>le</strong>s maladies du poumon.De toutes <strong>le</strong>s maladies, cel<strong>le</strong>s qui paraissent <strong>le</strong> plus heureusementinfluencées par <strong>le</strong> climat sont, à coup sûr, <strong>le</strong>s affectionsdu poumon, et on comprend d'ail<strong>le</strong>urs faci<strong>le</strong>ment cette action.thérapeutique, lorsqu'on songe au contact direct et incessant del'air avec <strong>le</strong> parenchyme pulmonaire, et si <strong>le</strong>s variations brusquesdelà température peuvent occasionner desbronchitesetdesinflammations du poumon, un air pur, à température éga<strong>le</strong>, agiten sens inverse et dissipe <strong>le</strong>s congestions pulmonaires qui sesont produites.Il est surtout une maladie du poumon où cette influence climatériquejoue un rô<strong>le</strong> prépondérant, c'est la phtisie pulmonaire,et nous voyons <strong>le</strong>s tubercu<strong>le</strong>ux chercher dans des régionsplus ou moins appropriées un climat favorab<strong>le</strong> à la cure de <strong>le</strong>uraffection pulmonaire.
DE LA CLIMATOTHÉRAPIE. 193Le nombre des ouvrages que l'on a écrits sur cette question estconsidérab<strong>le</strong> et je ne puis vous <strong>le</strong>s indiquer tous. Je ferai cependantune exception pour <strong>le</strong> travail de Williams (1), où l'ontrouve des chiffres qui ont une réel<strong>le</strong> importance. Sur 235 phtisiquesayant vécu dans <strong>le</strong>s pays chauds, Williams trouve103 améliorations, 33 états stationnaires et 99 aggravations, ensorte que près de la moitié de ces tubercu<strong>le</strong>ux auraient tiré uneinfluence favorab<strong>le</strong> des climats chauds.L'auteur a d'ail<strong>le</strong>urs poussé plus loin ses recherches et aétabli <strong>le</strong> pour centage des améliorations, des états stationnaireset des aggravations suivant <strong>le</strong>s diverses stations hiverna<strong>le</strong>s oùavaient séjourné ces malades, et voici comment sont répartis ceschiffres :1° Climats tempérés et humides dans l'intérieur des terres (Arcachon,Pau, Bagnères-de-Bigorre, Borne) : 52,7 pour 100 améliorés;7,83 pour 100 stationnaires; 44,8 pour 100 aggravés;t 2° Climats secs du bassin de ta Méditerranée (Hyères, Cannes,>Nice, Menton, San-Remo, Malaga, Ajaccio, Pa<strong>le</strong>rme, Malte,Corfou, Chypre, Alger) : améliorés, 58,5 pour 100; stationnaires,20,7 pour 100; aggravés, 19,6 pour 100;3° Climats très secs (sud de l'Europe, Egypte, Syrie, Cap,Natal, Tanger) : améliorés,-61,8 pour 100; 24,6 pour 100 stationnaires;4° Climats humides et chauds de l'Atlantique (Madère, Canaries,Sainte-Hélène, Indes occidenta<strong>le</strong>s, Indes en général, Nouvel<strong>le</strong>-Zélande,Amérique du Sud (Andes) : 52 pour 100 améliorés;14,7 pour 100 stationnaires; 33,5 pour 100 aggravés.A côté de ces climats chauds, dits climats de plaine, on aopposé <strong>le</strong>s climats d'altitude dans la cure de la phtisie, et nousvoyons chacune de ces stations avoir ses partisans et ses adversaires; <strong>le</strong>s uns, soutenant que <strong>le</strong>s stations d'altitude ont uneaction médicatrice directe sur la tuberculose, tandis que <strong>le</strong>s stationsde plaine ou de pays chauds permettent aux tubercu<strong>le</strong>uxde vivre, ce que <strong>le</strong> professeur Jaccoud a traduit sous une formeélégante en disant que « <strong>le</strong>s climats d'altitude sont <strong>le</strong>s agentscurateurs dans <strong>le</strong> traitement de la tuberculose, tandis que <strong>le</strong>sclimats de plaine n'en sont que <strong>le</strong>s témoins »; <strong>le</strong>s. autres; aur(1) Williams, Etude sur <strong>le</strong>s effets des climats chauds dans <strong>le</strong> traitementde la consomption pulmonaire, trad.
