CAVARADOSSI
MESNER
Welche frohe Nachricht, Euer Gnaden!
Schnell!
(Andere Schüler kommen langsam, und alle bilden
schließlich eine Gruppe.)
CHORSCHÜLER (verwirrt)
Wohin?
MESNER
(schiebt einige der Geistlichen vor sich her)
In die Sakristei.
EINIGE
Aber was ist geschehen?
MESNER
Ihr wißt es nicht?
Bonaparte ... der Verbrecher ...
Bonaparte ...
ANDERE
Und? Was geschah?
MESNER
Wurde aufgetrieben und vertrieben
und zum Teufel gejagt!
CHOR
Wer sagt das? Ist ein Traum, ist Schwachsinn!
MESNER
Wahr ist die Kunde!
Eben traf Nachricht ein!
CAVARADOSSI
Se ci assalgon, battaglia!
(Escono rapidamente dalla cappella. Entra il
sagrestano correndo, tutto scalmanato, gridando:)
SAGRESTANO
12 Sommo giubilo, Eccellenza!
radunano tutti.)
ALLIEVI (colla massima confusione)
Dove?
SAGRESTANO
(spinge alcuni chierici)
In sagrestia.
ALCUNI ALLIEVI
Ma che avvenne?
SAGRESTANO
Nol sapete?
Bonaparte...scellerato...
Bonaparte...
ALTRI
Ebben? Che fu?
SAGRESTANO
Fu spennato, sfracellato
e piombato a Belzebù!
CORO
Chi lo dice? È sogno! È fola!
SAGRESTANO
È veridica parola;
or ne giunse la notizia!
14
CAVARADOSSI
If we’re attacked we fight!
(They leave quickly by the chapel. Enter the sacristan
running, bustling and shouting.)
SACRISTAN
Joyful news, Excellency!
(He looks towards the scaffold, and is surprised that
once again the painter is not there.)
He’s gone. I am disappointed.
He who aggrieves a misbeliever
earns an indulgence!
(Priests, pupils and singers of the chapel enter tumultuously
from every direction.)
The whole choir is here!
Hurry!
(Other pupils arrive tardily, and at length all group themselves
together.)
PUPILS (in great confusion)
Where?
SACRISTAN
(pushing some of the priests along)
In the sacristy.
SOME PUPILS
But what’s happened?
SACRISTAN
You haven’t heard?
Bonaparte...the scoundrel...
Bonaparte...
OTHERS
Well? What?
SACRISTAN
He was plucked and quartered
and thrown to Beelzebub!
CHORUS
Who says so? It’s a dream! It’s nonsense!
SACRISTAN
It’s a true report.
The news just reached us.
CAVARADOSSI
Si on nous attaque, défendons-nous !
(Ils partent rapidement par la chapelle. Le sacristain
entre en courant, très excité.)
SACRISTAIN
Bonne nouvelle, Excellence !
Cela me chagrine !
Grand branle-bas.)
Tout le chœur est là !
Vite !
(D’autres chanteurs arrivent en se hâtant. Un groupe se
forme.)
CLERCS (en grand émoi)
Où ?
SACRISTAIN
(poussant plusieurs prêtres)
Dans la sacristie.
CLERCS
Mais que se passe-t-il ?
SACRISTAIN
Vous ne savez pas ?
Bonaparte... ce bandit...
Bonaparte...
CLERCS
Eh bien, quoi ?
SACRISTAIN
Il a été plumé et écrasé,
envoyé à Belzébuth !
CHŒUR
Qui l’a dit ? C’est un rêve ! C’est impossible !
SACRISTAIN
C’est la vérité.
Nous venons d’apprendre la nouvelle !
