Anciennement appelé « Port-aux-Prunes » au
XVIIe siècle, puis dénommé « Îlot prune », ce
site est actuellement connu sous le nom de
« Ile aux Prunes » ou encore « Nosy Alagnagna »
(Alagnagna signifiant sable) et «Nosy
Ilaintsambo ». Localisé à 17km du port de Toamasina, cet
îlot inhabité de forme ovale est un lieu tranquille propice au
farniente ou pour une plongée sous-marine. Son fond marin
exceptionnel est un véritable aquarium géant et attire les
amoureux des fonds. L’île est en plus protégée par une barrière
corallienne, ce qui offre une très grande sécurité à ceux qui
voudraient faire du snorkeling. A vos masques et tubas!
Une autre attraction fait la renommée de ce site: c’est son
phare, le plus haut du continent africain! Construit entre 1931
et 1933, avec ses 66 mètres de haut, il dépasse celui de Port-
Saïd en Egypte. En atteignant le sommet, vous aurez une
vue imprenable à 360° sur les magnifiques paysages aux
alentours : les belles plages, la côte, l’immensité de l’océan.
Boisée de conifères et de badamiers, l’île abrite les rousettes,
des chauves-souris endémiques de Madagascar. Ces
mammifères, issus des chiroptères, sont dotés d’un pelage
brun foncé et roux, d’où leur appellation de « Renard volant ».
Referred to in the 17th century as Port-aux-Prunes,
then Îlot prune, the island now bears the name
of Ile aux Prunes or Nosy Alagnagna (Alagnagna
means ‘sand’) and Nosy Ilaintsambo. Located
17km from the port of Toamasina, this ovalshaped
uninhabited island is a totally peaceful spot where
visitors can just relax or practise diving. Its exceptionally rich
aquatic environment is like a giant aquarium that attracts
lovers of marine life. Since it is protected by a coral reef, it is
totally safe for those wishing to go snorkelling.
The island also houses another attraction, its lighthouse,
which is the tallest in Africa. Constructed between 1931 and
1933, with its height of 66 metres, it is taller than the one of
Port-Saïd in Egypt. Visitors can climb to the top, from where
they will have a 360° view over the magnificent surrounding
scenery: the stunning beaches, the coast and the vast
turquoise ocean.
The interior of the island is covered with a forest of conifers
and tropical almonds, which shelter a species of pteropus, a
fruit bat endemic to Madagascar. This mammal has a dark
brown and reddish coat, which explains why it is referred to
as the flying fox.
