According to the archives, pirates who moored off the coast of Sainte-Marie were among the richest during their time. In fact, some archaeologists discovered a silver ingot weighing around 55kg in the deep waters around Îlot Madame, to the north-east of Sainte-Marie island. The engravings on this famous treasure made people believe it could be the long lost treasure of Captain Kidd, even though it seems impossible to decipher the writings on the ingot. Indeed, the story goes that the Adventure Galley, Captain Kidd’s ship, apparently ran aground in the waters. Some people say that the famous pirate set fire to his ship after losing a battle, before he sailed back to New York, his place of birth, on another ship. The famous Captain was hanged for his crimes in 1701. Even now, the wreck of the Adventure Galley and its treasure are still a subject of fascination for treasure hunters. The reason behind the attraction of Sainte-Marie island for pirates was simple: the European authorities did not yet own the island. Consequently, there were not yet any maritime laws, which had obvious consequences, enabling all the pirate activity to take place. These outlaws were even well looked after, as they could anchor their hospital ships in the harbour, allowing them to receive appropriate health care and food. The important presence of pirates was a plague for the world economy, mainly for trade between Madagascar and America, as well as with certain European countries. This was when the famous pirate community named ‘Libertalia’ was set up, an anarchist colony that reigned over the area, even though some people still consider it to be purely a myth. Visit Sainte-Marie Island and discover its historical heritage: the pirate cemetery is one of the main attractions of the island, the oldest tombs dating back to the 18th century. Magazine online www.primemedia.international | 47 |
